Black-haired soldier

Long black hair set this officer apart, worn parted and brushed clear of his eyes. He stood at an unremarkable height with a trim 60 kilogram frame. Off duty he layered a short-sleeve shirt over a long-sleeve one and paired the combination with dark trousers; in the field he wore standard Survey Corps equipment.

Battle brought out his serious side, but generosity defined him among comrades. He drained two months of the Survey Corps' food budget on a meat feast to send his fellow soldiers off to Wall Maria properly, then sheepishly apologized to the other officers when the celebration dissolved into brawling over portions.

The team leader appears during the Return to Shiganshina arc, first at a briefing where Erwin Smith walks his officers through the revelations surrounding Grisha Yeager. As the meeting breaks up he floats the idea of serving red meat before the expedition, and the others approve. He buys it from the Reeves Company with what little money the branch has left. On departure morning he salutes members of the other military branches at the gate, then apologizes once more when Trost's citizens, tipped off through Flegel Reeves, turn the supposedly secret launch into a public send-off.

At Shiganshina the Corps seals the outer breach in Wall Maria before the Beast Titan springs its ambush. Following Erwin's orders, he rides with Squad Levi and Squad Hange against the Armored Titan and helps bring it down, seemingly for good. When a barrel arcs over the Wall in place of a boulder, the group scatters, then moves back in on Hange's command to finish off Reiner. Bertolt's transformation detonates above them at that exact moment, and the blast kills the team leader along with nearly everyone around him.
