Braun family

The Braun family lives inside Liberio's internment zone under Marleyan rule. Its most prominent members serve the Warrior program: Reiner holds the Armored Titan, while Gabi stands out as the leading candidate to receive it after him.

Reiner's origins shape the family's story. His mother Karina had a child with a Marleyan man in 833, a union the law forbade, leaving her to raise her son inside the zone. On learning the truth about his parentage, Reiner threw himself into the Warrior program hoping to win honorary Marleyan status for them both. He gained the Armored Titan in 843 and crossed to Paradis Island two years later as part of Marley's infiltration operation. Gabi eventually followed his path, and her record as a candidate made her a favorite for the succession.

At the close of the Marley Mid-East War, Gabi proves herself at Fort Slava by blowing up an armored train with explosives, opening a path for the Jaw Titan, while Reiner's Armored Titan finishes the surviving defenders. The family reunites over dinner in Liberio, where Karina delights in the prospect of a second Warrior in the household. Privately, Reiner is unraveling; he comes close to taking his own life, stopped only by overhearing Falco Grice's frustration at never beating Gabi.

Eren Yeager's infiltration of Liberio shatters this fragile peace. His transformation buries Reiner, who barely musters a partial Armored form in time to save the Jaw Titan from destruction. Gabi chases the retreating Survey Corps, guns down a soldier mid-flight, and climbs to the airship, where she fatally shoots Sasha Blouse before being captured and jailed on Paradis Island.

After escaping with Falco, Gabi shelters with the Blouse family until her identity surfaces at Niccolo's restaurant, the same night the truth about wine laced with Zeke's spinal fluid comes out. In the battle for Shiganshina she blows Eren's head from his body with an anti-Titan rifle, and Reiner survives the fight thanks to Porco Galliard's sacrifice. The cousins then join the alliance formed to halt the Rumbling; Gabi wounds Floch Forster at the port and rescues Kaya from a Titan, the two girls trading apologies afterward. At Fort Salta, Karina, Gabi, and Gabi's parents are briefly turned into Pure Titans before Eren's death restores every transformed Eldian to human form. Three years on, Reiner serves as an ambassador to the world's remnants, while Gabi and Falco, who later marry, help look after Levi.

Reiner Braun and Gabi Braun anchor the family, joined by Reiner's mother Karina, Gabi's unnamed parents, and an uncle, aunt, and cousin on Reiner's side whose fates go unrecorded. All eight known members were alive at the story's end.

The surname means "brown" in German.
