Age has left Calvi lean rather than heavy, a man deep into his middle years who never appears anything less than immaculate. His dress sets him apart from every other officer: a sash cuts across the standard Marleyan tunic from one shoulder down to the opposite hip, and a row of four medals decorates the left side of his chest, apparent markers of rank or of old battlefield distinctions.

Rank gives Calvi the standing to demand explanations from anyone beneath him, Theo Magath included, even though Magath commands the army's Eldian unit himself. National pride runs deep in him; he cherishes the era when Marley crushed the Eldian Empire and openly grieves over how far the country has slipped in the modern age. His contempt for Eldians is real but understated. Approving Zeke Yeager's plan, he remarks with dry sarcasm that nobody questions the loyalty of a man who once turned in his own parents as Restorationists.

The Marley Mid-East War closes with a victory that feels like a defeat. Chairing the postwar conference alongside Zeke Yeager, Theo Magath, and the rest of the high command, Calvi vents his frustration that anti-Titan artillery has swung world sympathy toward the beaten Mid-East Allied Forces. Magath's diagnosis is blunt: decades of leaning on Titans let every rival outpace Marley in conventional arms. Calvi concedes the point bitterly, mourning what has become of the great nation that once broke the Eldian devils. Zeke then asks leave to speak and pitches a second attempt at wresting the Founding Titan away from Paradis Island. Pressed by Calvi on whether revenge for the botched operation of four years earlier is what drives him, Zeke answers plainly that it is, and the general promises to carry the proposal to the upper ranks.

A month afterward, a festival staged by the Tybur family draws Marley's brass to Liberio's internment zone, Calvi among them; he pauses to ask a junior officer how the event's security, a duty resting on Magath, is being handled. Willy Tybur's address exposes the truth behind the ancient King Karl Fritz, leaving Calvi silent in thought while officers argue heatedly around him. The speech builds to a formal declaration of war on Paradis, and the Attack Titan answers it instantly, smashing up through the stage, killing Lord Tybur, and rounding on the assembled leadership. Calvi meets its gaze without a word before it plunges into the packed audience and grinds the officers underfoot, him among them.
