Dirk

Long, light-colored hair swept back from his forehead keeps Dirk's eyes clear, and a thin beard traces his chin and cheekbones beneath a small mustache. His height and build are unremarkable. Out of uniform he wears a black vest over a white button-up shirt and dark trousers.

Composure defines Dirk. When brawls erupt among soldiers over a meat dinner, he simply remarks on the behavior and lets it burn itself out rather than intervene. His superiors clearly rely on him: he rides beside Erwin Smith through the Shiganshina operation, offering counsel along the way, and speaks frankly with Levi on the battlefield.

Dirk is jailed along with the rest of the Survey Corps when the organization is framed for Dimo Reeves's murder, regaining his freedom after Erwin's exoneration.

Before the Corps sets out to retake Wall Maria, he attends the officers' meeting on the revelations about Grisha Yeager and floats the idea of punishing Keith Shadis for hiding what he knew, a suggestion Hange Zoë waves off. He shares in the celebratory dinner, ignores the fights it sparks, and departs at dawn with the Corps to unexpected cheering from the citizens of Trost.

At Shiganshina, Dirk waits atop Wall Maria beside Erwin while Eren plugs the breach, puzzling over why no enemy has struck and wondering aloud whether the Corps' numbers have Reiner and Bertolt overmatched. Armin's discovery of evidence pointing to a third enemy soldier shocks him, and he calls Erwin's decision to hand Armin command a serious gamble. Once the Beast Titan's army reveals itself, Erwin sends Dirk's team to guard the horses together with the squads of Marlene and Klaus. Dirk cuts down the Titans on his flank, tells Levi only a handful remain, and urges the exhausted captain to rest. Moments later the Beast Titan's first stone volley wipes out the soldiers around him; Dirk survives just long enough to register a comrade's corpse before a second barrage tears him to pieces.
