Hange Zoë

Hange's square, thick-rimmed combat goggles, strapped tight around the head so battle cannot dislodge them, define the character at a glance; away from the field they swap to thin oval glasses, and pushing either pair up onto the forehead reliably signals fury or dead seriousness. Wide, light brown eyes sit beneath dark brown hair yanked into a hasty high ponytail with bangs parted at the center, usually oily from neglect since Hange rarely stops working long enough to wash. After the blast of Bertolt Hoover's transformation at Shiganshina mangles their left eye, a small black eye patch covers it.

Hange wears the regular Survey Corps uniform over a white button-up, adds the green cloak on missions, and as commander keeps the bolo tie of the military's leadership on at all times. Out of uniform the default is a white shirt with black pants, and in a real hurry Hange will throw the Corps jacket straight over sleepwear.

To most observers Hange is the Corps' resident eccentric, an exuberant freethinker who runs on pure curiosity. It began as the opposite: Hange entered the military full of hatred, until the strange lightness of a Titan's severed head upended every assumption and converted rage into fascination. The affection for their subjects is genuine; Hange weeps while running a painful experiment on the captive Titan Bean and breaks down completely when both test subjects are killed.

War gradually mutes the mania. As the enemy grows clearer, Hange turns calm, serious, and visibly worn, prone under command's weight to eruptions of temper, strain, and fatigue, yet the empathy stays intact, as when they embrace a grieving Mikasa and speak of the endless loss of comrades. Privately, Hange admits to Moblit that everything unknown about the Titans terrifies them.

A darker register exists too. Hange wears a demented grin while promising Djel Sannes an agonizing payback for Minister Nick and cracks jokes throughout his torture. The swings between cheer and menace track with the glasses: pushed up means danger, lowered means the sunshine is back. Behind it all operates a genuine tactical mind, an inventor and manipulator that Erwin Smith trusted enough to name his successor.

As squad leader of the Fourth Squad, Hange directs the Corps' Titan research, studying the captives Sonny and Bean and then Eren Yeager, whose teaspoon-triggered transformation leads Hange to conclude that his power answers only to a clear goal. Hange helps spring Erwin's trap on the Female Titan during the 57th Expedition, and in Stohess afterward discovers a giant Titan dozing inside the Wall itself, dangling Minister Nick over the edge for answers and prying loose the first hints of the Church's secrets. Matching a chip of Annie's hardened skin to Wall material, Hange theorizes the Walls themselves are built from Titans; the Ragako investigation then proves something worse, that every Titan was once a human being.

After Nick's murder, Hange reads the signs of torture on his corpse, helps Levi break Sannes, and pieces together the Reiss family's claim to the true throne. Named acting commander when Erwin is arrested, Hange turns Flegel Reeves and the Berg Newspapers into weapons that flip public opinion and bring down the false monarchy, survives a wound in the chapel raid, and engineers Rod Reiss's destruction at Orvud. The Executioner from Hell, Hange's Titan-killing trap, follows soon after. At Shiganshina, Hange's Thunder Spear assault cripples Reiner until Bertolt's explosion, from which Moblit's final act of sacrifice saves them, takes Hange's eye; they return anyway to blow the Armored Titan's jaw open. With Erwin dead, Hange formally becomes the fourteenth commander, opens Grisha's basement alongside Levi, Eren, and Mikasa, and reveals to the Walls that humanity outside survives.

Through the following years Hange builds up Paradis with Onyankopon and Yelena, courts Hizuru, and commands the getaway airship over Liberio, where they tell Eren the Corps' trust in him is exhausted. The Yeagerist coup makes Hange a prisoner, then a fugitive: finding Levi shredded by a Thunder Spear blast, Hange pronounces him dead to the Yeagerists, dives into a river with him, and nurses him as Eren unleashes the Rumbling. Hange then brokers the alliance with Magath and Pieck, wins over the surviving 104th, fights through the harbor, and sails for Odiha, where the dying Floch punctures the flying boat's fuel tank. To buy the repair time, Hange appoints Armin the fifteenth commander, hears Levi tell them to dedicate their heart, and charges the oncoming Wall Titans alone, downing several before the heat burns them to death, just long enough for the boat to lift off. Hange wakes among the Corps' fallen, welcomed by Erwin, and stands with them in the final salute Levi sees after Eren's defeat.
