Kenny's grandfather

Illness has left the old man wasted and bedbound, dressed in loose garments that hang off his frame. Lank, pale hair falls to his neck around tired eyes and a pointed nose, and his mustache runs down into a beard.

He means to die silent, judging that ignorance is the best protection he can leave the Ackermans who come after him, and he plainly disapproves of the murders his grandson commits in the capital. Even so, Kenny is the one person he trusts with the clan's buried past.

Near the end of his life, the bedridden elder receives a visit from Kenny, fresh from cutting down Military Police who strayed too near the house. Pressed to explain the government's campaign against their family, he corrects the premise: the Ackermans were feared rather than hated, because the memory-rewriting power of the King who raised the Walls slid off their bloodline, just as it did off the Asian clan. Ancestors who rebelled against the crown's ideals brought the persecution down, then hid the truth from their own children as a shield, though the hunting never ceased.

Kenny also brings word that his sister Kuchel is pregnant by a client of the Underground brothel where she works and intends to keep the child; the old man greets the news with indifference. He is the great-grandfather of the boy that child becomes, Levi Ackerman.
