An Eldian family of two known members, the Kirsteins make their home in Trost District inside the Walls. Jean and his mother both survive the series, and the family's military legacy rests entirely on Jean, who trains with the 104th, fights with the Special Operations Squad, and rises to a command post in the Survey Corps.
Jean enrolls in the 104th Training Corps in the year 847 with his sights set on the Military Police Brigade. Graduation places him sixth in his class, yet he abandons that ambition and enlists with the Survey Corps instead. Later, in the lead-up to the return to Shiganshina, Eren needles him with the pet name his mother calls him, adding that Jean ought to treat her better, and earns a punch for it. After the Rumbling, Connie Springer notes that Historia Reiss took both his family and Jean's under her protection.
