Short blond hair tops an otherwise unremarkable frame; nothing about Klaus's height or build sets him apart from the rank and file. Away from his duties he dresses simply, pairing a buttoned shirt with dark trousers, while on missions he wears standard Survey Corps equipment.

The little the story shows of Klaus paints him as blunt and direct. During a briefing on Grisha Yeager's past he openly questions whether the doctor ever truly backed the Corps, remarking with some sarcasm that a real supporter would have lent them far more help.

Klaus commands his own squad within the Survey Corps and holds the rank of team leader when the operation to win back Wall Maria begins. He sits in on the officers' meeting where Erwin Smith lays out the recent discoveries about Eren's father, and he notes as the group departs that the assignment ought to stay confidential.

At Shiganshina the arrival of the Beast Titan forces a change of plans; Erwin directs Klaus's unit, together with the squads under Dirk and Marlene, to keep the expedition's horses safe. The post offers no protection when the Beast Titan begins hurling crushed boulders. The volley tears Klaus and everyone fighting beside him to pieces.
