Marco Bott

Freckles are Marco's signature, scattered across a face framed by parted brown hair kept short. He stands taller than most classmates and carries genuine muscle on a broad frame, with light brown eyes completing the friendly look. Away from trainee gear, he dresses in a light button-up shirt, dark vest, and dark trousers, an outfit so close to Jean's that the two practically match.

Idealism drives Marco, and it is the honest kind. Where most cadets chase the Military Police Brigade for its safety and comfort, his ambition to join comes from sincere loyalty to the king, and his classmates respect him enough to call him a born leader. He knows his own limits, puts the group's welfare ahead of his score, and shows a sharp eye for character: he is the first to spot Jean's leadership instincts and pushes him to trust them. Keeping order comes naturally, whether he is defusing arguments in the mess hall or steadying panicked soldiers mid-battle. Even terrified, he stays composed, and in his final moments he is still trying to talk the problem out.

Marco enters the story at the 104th's initiation, withering under instructor Keith Shadis after voicing his Military Police ambitions. He quickly becomes the class mediator, reining in the trainees who swarm Eren Yeager with questions about Shiganshina and steering Eren toward Reiner and Bertolt for help with the maneuvering gear. During a mock combat exercise he skips easy kills to scout targets for other trainees, explaining afterward that in a real fight he would rather draw Titans' attention so faster soldiers could finish them. When admiring classmates say they would serve under him, he deflects the praise toward Jean, beginning the friendship that defines both of them. He graduates seventh in the class.

When the Colossus Titan smashes open Trost, Marco receives the 19th Trainee Squad to lead in support of the vanguard. Stranded in the city without gas like the rest of the survivors, he resigns himself to dying until Mikasa and Jean rally a desperate push to the occupied headquarters. There he restrains a furious Jean, helps Armin design the rifle ambush that blinds the seven Titans inside, and holds the group steady until standby soldiers finish the kill. He then spends the lull talking Daz down from suicide and keeping morale alive through Dot Pixis' plan to reclaim the district, serving as bait on the Wall while Eren hauls the boulder.

During that operation Marco catches Reiner and Bertolt privately discussing their roles in breaching the Wall. Assuming a dark joke, he brushes them off, but Reiner pins him against a building and orders Annie to strip his maneuvering gear. The three abandon him, weeping and begging to talk, to be bitten in half by a Titan. Jean discovers the body after the battle, and Marco burns on a communal pyre with the other dead. His absence reshapes the survivors: Jean joins the Survey Corps to honor him, Armin's memory of their shared equipment maintenance exposes Annie's stolen gear in Stohess, and years later Reiner's confession of the murder drives Jean into a violent rage. He remains the conscience Jean pictures when choosing which side of history to stand on.
