Mikasa Ackerman

A black scarf, Eren's first gift to her, stays wrapped around Mikasa's neck through nearly every chapter of her life. Beneath it stands a tall, powerfully conditioned fighter with pale skin and gray eyes, her partial Asian ancestry setting her apart inside the Walls. Hair worn long in childhood gets cropped to her chin as a cadet, shorter still by 854 while her bangs grow out, and returns as a ponytail after the war. Two marks endure: the Azumabito crest carved into her right wrist in childhood, and a thin scar under her right eye from Eren's berserk Titan at Trost. On expeditions she pairs Corps equipment with a white blouse and green cape; by the Liberio raid she wears the black assault uniform, chest-plated and strung with belts for spears, guns, and spare gas.

The outgoing, gentle girl of the farmlands died the night traffickers butchered her parents; what emerged was someone withdrawn, level headed, and quietly intimidating, a soldier who almost never loses composure no matter how hopeless the field looks. The murders fixed her conclusion that the world is cruel, that only the strong survive it, and, in her own words, that it is beautiful anyway. She stays humble despite talent that awes veterans, keeps a soft spot for children, and treats her few loved ones as irreplaceable family. That devotion is also her flaw: when they are in danger her judgment fogs with fury, and after Eren's apparent death in Trost she briefly loses her will to live. Eren anchors everything. His command to fight gave her a creed, his scarf became her comfort, and his cold claim of having always hated her cut deeper than any battle; yet it is Mikasa who finally surrenders a life beside him to stop the Rumbling, grieving at his grave for decades afterward.

Born to an Ackerman father and a mother of the Azumabito bloodline, Mikasa lived quietly near Shiganshina until age nine, when traffickers murdered her parents and carried her off. Eren Yeager, son of the family's doctor, killed two of the men and urged her to fight; driving a blade through the third awakened the Ackerman clan's combat instincts in her. The Yeagers took her in, and after the fall of Wall Maria and Carla's death she enlisted alongside Eren and Armin, graduating first in the 104th.

At Trost she saves the trapped evacuees, rallies the stranded trainees after word of Eren's death, and nearly dies before his Titan form reveals he lives. She shadows him into the Survey Corps: hunting the Female Titan on the 57th expedition, dragging Eren from its jaws with Levi, and severing Annie's fingers from the Wall in Stohess. When Reiner and Bertolt unmask themselves she attacks without hesitation, and the rescue that follows costs Hannes his life. Under Levi's squad she fights through the coup, learns what her Ackerman name means, and helps bring down Rod Reiss. At Shiganshina she finishes the Armored Titan with a Thunder Spear down its throat, then turns her blade on Levi himself when he picks Erwin over a dying Armin for the single Titan serum, relenting only through Hange's intervention. The basement, the thirteen-year curse, and the ocean follow.

The Marley years reshape her world: ambassador Kiyomi Azumabito reveals her wrist mark as the crest of Hizuru's lost lord, making her a political linchpin abroad. She spearheads the Liberio raid, blasting the War Hammer Titan's nape with eight Thunder Spears, and loses Sasha on the flight home. When Eren embraces the Yeagerists he tells her she is nothing but a slave to Ackerman instinct and that he has always hated her; she leaves the scarf behind, yet joins the alliance of former enemies once the Rumbling begins. She kills Floch to protect the flying boat, fights across Eren's colossal Titan in the final battle, and, guided by a vision of the life they might have shared, enters the Founding Titan's mouth and takes Eren's head, kissing him goodbye. Her choice releases Ymir Fritz and ends the Titans. Mikasa buries Eren beneath his favorite tree outside Shiganshina, visits for decades with the family she eventually builds, and dies in old age still wearing the scarf.
