Moblit Berner

Little about Moblit stands out physically. He is a man of middling height and ordinary build whose light hair lies smooth and parted at the center, and worry is his default expression, an occupational hazard of serving under an impulsive commander. Over a buttoned shirt he wears Survey Corps standard dress, switching at times to a white button-down paired with black pants, and on missions he adds the green expedition cloak.

Responsibility defines him. Minding the Corps' most eccentric officer demands intelligence and endless patience, and the job keeps Moblit hovering near panic, forever pleading with Hange to be careful or physically hauling them to safety. That he never leaves their side speaks to deep loyalty regardless of the stress. A harder edge surfaces when missions require it: he wrenches the journalist Peaure's hand to stop him taking notes, holds down Djel Sannes' chair through a torture session, and in his last seconds trades his own life for his squad leader's.

Moblit debuts as Hange Zoë's assistant during their attempts to communicate with the captured Titans Sonny and Bean, repeatedly dragging his superior back when an experiment nearly costs Hange their head. After the two specimens are murdered, he tries to calm Hange's screaming grief. He is on hand when Eren Yeager accidentally transforms mid-meal, frantic as Hange burns themselves inspecting the steaming Titan body, and he rides on the 57th expedition, where he watches the swarm of Titans devour the captured Female Titan before the Corps retreats to Karanes District. Following Annie Leonhart's capture in Stohess, he helps attempt her extraction until she seals herself in crystal, then rushes to Hange for orders when a Titan is discovered inside the Wall itself.

When Titans are reported inside Wall Rose, Moblit hurries Hange out the door, checks Eren's fitness to ride at Ehrmich District, and joins the relief of Utgard Castle, afterward reporting the strange vapor rising from Ymir's wounds. When Bertolt Hoover and Reiner Braun stand revealed as the Colossus and Armored Titans, he is thrown into open battle; scalding steam drives his attack on the Colossus back, and the explosion of Bertolt's landing later leaves him badly burned.

Recovered, he works the shadow war against the royal government at Hange's side: investigating Minister Nick's murder and defusing a confrontation with the Military Police, recording Eren's endurance experiments and sketching the boy's disfigured face, taking notes through Sannes' torture, restraining Peaure during the Berg Newspapers raid, ambushing the officers tricked by Flegel Reeves, and carrying word of the Reiss Chapel plan to Erwin. He stands witness at Historia's coronation and celebrates when the Executioner from Hell proves Hange's ideas work.

At Shiganshina, after the Thunder Spear barrage against the Armored Titan, Moblit and Hange watch Armin's failed negotiation with Bertolt. Realizing too late that Bertolt intends to transform, Moblit reaches Hange just in time to push them down a well, taking the full blast himself. The fallen vice captain returns in visions: among the dead questioning Erwin at Shiganshina, in Hange's memories, and, when Hange dies at Odiha, as one of the first souls to greet them, helping his squad leader up from the ground before the final salute to Levi.
