Appearance

Nanaba keeps her light hair cropped short in an undercut, the bangs parted a touch off to the right. Though small in stature and slight of frame, her body is honed by years of maneuvering gear work, and that fitness shows whenever she takes to the air. Over a light v-necked shirt she wears the regular Survey Corps uniform, adding the green cape of the corps when riding on operations.

Personality

Quiet composure is Nanaba's default; she seldom speaks unprompted and carries herself with calm. News of a possible breach in Wall Rose briefly drags her into despair, yet she pulls herself back to resolve almost immediately with Mike's encouragement. Above all she is protective. She repeatedly puts her body between danger and the recruits in her charge, and in the end it is the defense of her comrades that kills her. Gelgar praises her bladework as superb, noting the depth of her cuts, and her squad's effortless slaying of eight Titans leaves even Ymir impressed. Surviving more than five years in the corps, including the era before Wall Maria fell, marks her as one of its true elites.

History

During the 57th Expedition beyond the Walls, Nanaba leads the unit containing Krista Lenz. When Titans begin scaling the trees at the forest's edge, she steadies the worried recruit, assuring her that climbing higher will keep them safe and that they only need to endure a little longer.

After the raid in Stohess, Squad Mike is assigned to watch a group of 104th recruits suspected of harboring a Titan spy. When Mike detects Titans advancing from the south of Wall Rose, Nanaba relays the alarm to the recruits and orders them onto horseback. On the rooftop she confesses her fading hope for humanity, and Mike restores her nerve by insisting that defeat only comes when the fighting stops. The group later splits into four search teams; hers scours Wall Rose for a breach, finds nothing, and meets Gelgar's team coming the other way. With night falling, both squads shelter in Utgard Castle.

Titans that can move in darkness soon besiege the castle. Because the suspected recruits carry no maneuvering gear, only Nanaba, Gelgar, Henning, and Lynne can fight. A projectile hurled by the Beast Titan kills Henning and Lynne, and as fresh hordes converge, Nanaba bitterly observes that the creature seems to have been toying with them all along. She and Gelgar battle on until every blade and canister is spent. When the wounded Gelgar drops from the tower into a Titan's grasp, Nanaba cuts the creature down to save him, only for her own gas to give out. Helpless, both soldiers are torn apart while the trainees watch from above.

Her memory lingers through the rest of the war. She appears among the dead in Erwin's visions of the soldiers he sacrificed, in Levi's reflections on the comrades lost protecting Eren, and in Hange's argument that the fallen would never endorse the Rumbling. Her spirit stands among those who welcome Hange in death at Odiha, and after Eren's defeat she salutes Levi one final time in his vision, honoring all he accomplished.
