War reshapes her edges. By 854 she operates as a cool-headed sharpshooter, agreeing with Jean that ending enemy soldiers has stopped feeling hard. Children remain beyond her; when the target is Gabi Braun, she cannot fire, and that hesitation costs Sasha her life.

Sasha grows up hunting beside her father Artur in Dauper. After Wall Maria's fall floods the region with refugees and empties its woods of game, he weighs giving up the forest for farmland and horse-raising; Sasha, furious at the thought of abandoning their way of life, signs up for the military out of spite. Training makes her a legend through the potato incident, which earns her five hours of running and a loaf of bread quietly delivered by Krista. At Trost she is sharing stolen meat with her squadmates atop the Wall when the Colossus Titan appears, and she saves Samuel from a deadly fall with a hook through his calf. Stranded among the gasless trainees, she backs Mikasa's desperate push to the headquarters, though her nerve fails in the supply room, where a shallow cut leaves her Titan alive and Mikasa rescuing her.
