Appearance

Long blonde hair falls far past Sharle's shoulders, her bangs parting at the center to frame her face while a braid on either side is drawn toward the back of her head. Her eyes are strikingly large. Early chapters show her in what appears to be a nightgown; afterward she typically dresses in a pale long-sleeved dress beneath a short buttoned jacket ending at the waist, finished with a light shawl knotted over her shoulders.

Personality

Behind an innocent exterior, Sharle carries a clear-eyed understanding of her position: her father valued her chiefly as a bargaining chip for a political marriage. Like many children she once harbored curiosity about Titans and the world outside, and when she learned that the rumored Titan's son lived under her family's roof, she convinced herself that killing him would save the town and finally give her birth some meaning.

In truth she is warm, outgoing, and quick to form friendships. Books and study attract her early, and she knows enough about the outside world to teach it to another person. Her mind works fast as well; roughly a month of apprenticeship makes her a capable craftsman, and within about three months she collaborates with two master craftsmen as an equal.

History

Raised in Wall Sheena with her father Dario and brother Xavi, Sharle sees her first Titan from atop Wall Maria and is left terrified. Her horror deepens when Dario purchases Kuklo, the supposed Titan's son, and she resolves to kill the boy; seeing him silently plead for death changes her mind. Over secret nightly visits she concludes he is simply human, teaches him to speak, and shares what she knows of the world. When Titan worshipers raid the mansion and murder Dario, Xavi blames Kuklo and slashes his eye. Declaring she no longer has a place there, Sharle flees with Kuklo to Shiganshina District.

In Shiganshina she keeps their shelter running while the Military Police search for them. She arms Kuklo with her iron bamboo knife before he stows away on a Survey Corps expedition, and when officers seize him on his return, she resolves to free him whatever it costs her. Carlo Pikale arranges for her to wait in the Industrial City under the foreman Xenophon Harkimo. Reunited with Kuklo there, she also meets Cardina Baumeister, the very man her father once arranged for her to marry, and learns the engagement is off. She protests when the two are steered toward the Survey Corps, then chooses her own contribution: unable to be a soldier, she asks Xenophon to take her on as an apprentice so she can fix the flawed design of the experimental device.

The Dissidence Movement drags her into its uprising as leverage, and Kuklo catches her out of a deadly fall with the device before Xavi recaptures her, hauling her back to Wall Sheena for a society debut aimed at marrying her to Michael Pottering. Slipping away, she tracks the reclusive inventor Angel Aaltonen through the Underground City and coaxes him out of his self-imposed exile. On the road back she proposes building the device's controls into the grip of the sword itself, the insight that produces the vertical maneuvering equipment. At the training academy she is presented to the trainees as one of its inventors, rooms with Rosa Carlstead, and admits aloud that she loves Kuklo. After sabotaged gear nearly kills Rosa, Sharle helps uncover the tampering and persuades Xavi to assist in catching the culprits.

She travels with the restored Survey Corps to Shiganshina for its survival expedition, watching from the Wall as the new equipment proves itself against the wilderness beyond. With Kuklo home unharmed, the Corps fully reinstated, and Carlo promoted to Commander, she writes to her friends in the Underground City with one final piece of news: she and Kuklo will marry within the month.
