Thomas carries a sturdy, well-muscled frame at average height. Dark hair of medium length parts down the middle, matched by a goatee and mustache, and beneath his Survey Corps uniform he favors a white v-necked shirt.

His placement alongside squad leaders like Mike Zacharias and Nanaba speaks to the confidence the Corps puts in him. Endurance is his signature, physical and mental alike; he drives himself through hours in the saddle to deliver word of the breach as fast as a horse can carry it, sparing barely sixty seconds in Ehrmich District, and only so its citizens can be warned that Titans are coming.

Mike Zacharias brings Thomas along with several other soldiers to watch over members of the 104th Training Corps suspected of aiding Annie Leonhart. While the group debates whether another of her accomplices hides among the trainees, Mike catches the scent of Titans approaching from the south of Wall Rose and orders Thomas to alert the commanders. Thomas rides for Ehrmich District, shouting for the population to evacuate, stops just long enough for water and the fastest fresh horse on hand, and pushes on to Stohess District, where he bursts into a meeting to inform Erwin Smith of the breach. He is not counted among the nine soldiers who survive the battle of Shiganshina District, suggesting he either died or left the Corps at some earlier point.
