Tybur family

Character

The Tybur family is a house of Eldian nobles living in Marley as honorary Marleyans and, in secret, the nation's true ruling power. Keepers of the War Hammer Titan for a century, they lose both their head Willy and the Titan itself when Eren Yeager attacks the Liberio festival in 854.

Overview

Honor and deception define the Tybur family's place in the world. Celebrated as the first Eldian house to turn against Eldia's rule during the Great Titan War, its members live in luxury as honorary Marleyans, exempt from armbands and internment zones alike, a privilege even the Warrior families never receive. Publicly they atone for their ancestors' crimes; in reality they sit at the top of Marley's power structure, steering the government from behind the scenes while quietly hosting the War Hammer Titan across generations. Only a select few ever learn which member carries it.

Role

Before the Great Titan War, the Tyburs presumably number among the Eldian houses warring over the Nine Titans, holding the War Hammer. Their famed defection to Marley conceals a deeper truth: they collaborate with King Karl Fritz himself, who wants the Eldian Empire dismantled out of guilt over its atrocities. Their support swings the conflict, bringing seven of the Nine Titans to Marley's side, and together with the king they fabricate the hero Helos to hand the victors a legend worth celebrating. Marley rewards the family with high nobility and mansion estates while the remaining Eldians are herded into internment zones. Over the following century the Tyburs swear loyalty to Marley yet never once field their Titan in its wars, instead cultivating wealthy and influential figures worldwide to improve how the Subjects of Ymir are treated, a quiet labor Willy admits earlier generations pursued less diligently. The Warriors' operation against Paradis Island also draws on Tybur intelligence about the island king's vow renouncing war.

After the Marley Mid-East War, Zeke Yeager warns that advancing military technology is eroding the value of the Titans, and the family agrees to lend its power and prestige to a renewed campaign against Paradis. Willy Tybur stages a press conference during a festival in the Liberio internment zone, privately expecting an enemy strike and choosing to bait one anyway. Moments after he declares war on Paradis Island, Eren Yeager's Attack Titan erupts beneath the stage and kills him. His sister Lara thanks him for his service to the family, transforms into the War Hammer Titan, and battles Eren through Liberio; despite an early advantage, she is defeated and devoured, ending the family's century-long stewardship of the Titan.

The household also fields an army of personal guards dressed in dark tunics with black cross-belts, cavalry boots, and white spiked helmets engraved with the family emblem, each man carrying a rifle and saber. Guards posted closest to the family appear chosen for sheer size; the one who escorts Theo Magath and Koslow to Willy stands taller than the door frame.

Notable Members

Ten members are known, and only two are confirmed dead: Willy Tybur, head of the family until his assassination in 854, and his sister Lara, the hidden bearer of the War Hammer Titan. Fine, Alois, Bruno, and Rico Tybur are the other named members, their fates unknown after Liberio. The surname appears to derive from Tiber, the river that runs through Rome.
