Appearance

Oval goggles worn in place of glasses are Udo's most recognizable feature, sitting over dark eyes beneath a shaggy mop of black hair. Though an ordinary-looking boy overall, he outstrips the other Warrior candidates in both height and weight.

His dress is the Marleyan soldier's kit: light jacket and trousers, hip packs, suspender straps, tall combat boots, and a hard hat. Eldian markers set his version apart, with a star badge at the collar, a white hat stripe carrying the same emblem, and the armband his people are bound by law to wear.

Personality

Nerves are Udo's weakness. Trained like all candidates to treat the wounded, he genuinely wants to help, but panic undercuts him at the worst moments, as when he binds Falco Grice's bandages painfully tight while fretting that the battle is going badly. Lasting four years against the Mid-East Allied Forces speaks to at least modest skill, and he understands enough of a foreign tongue to interpret for a captured enemy soldier.

The treatment of Eldians is his sore spot. Having lived in a foreign internment zone where conditions were uglier than Marley's, he repeatedly boils over at the contempt his people absorb from superiors, enemies, and dinner guests alike.

History

Udo's family moved to Liberio from an internment zone abroad, trading one flavor of persecution for a milder one. He serves in the trenches of the Marley Mid-East War, where he tends to the injured Falco and later helps make sense of a wounded enemy soldier's mutterings. After the victory at Fort Slava he watches surviving enemy troops board ships for home and rages that their war stories will blacken the Eldian name worldwide, lashing out at whatever is in reach until Reiner Braun arrives. A celebration held in Gabi Braun's honor follows on the voyage back.

In Liberio he reunites with his family, grumbles at how quickly the Warriors are summoned back to headquarters, and delights in Falco's first sparring win over Gabi, spreading the news to the soldiers on the way home. Serving at a reception for visiting ambassadors, he grows distracted by guests insulting Eldians and spills wine on Kiyomi Azumabito of Hizuru; rather than punish him, she covers up the mistake, leaving Udo stunned that anyone would shield an Eldian knowingly.

He enjoys the festival the next day and stands with the other candidates for Willy Tybur's address, absorbing the revelation that the Great Titan War was secretly ended by the 145th King, Karl Fritz. When Eren Yeager's Attack Titan erupts behind the stage, flying rubble crushes Zofia beside him. Udo tries to pull her body free and is knocked down and trampled by the fleeing crowd, his head split open against the debris and his neck broken. Colt and Gabi carry him through the chaos to a hospital, where a doctor refuses him a bed, declaring him already dead; a grieving Colt lays the body on a sheet outside.
