Ymir

Freckles scattered across her cheeks give Ymir a common touch, set against piercing gray eyes that unsettle most people who meet them. She is tall and lean, her shaggy black hair parted at the center and usually gathered into a low ponytail secured by a white tie. As a soldier she wears her faction's uniform over a dark v-necked shirt; in the days when Eldians revered her as a goddess she dressed in a pale halter gown, and in her last stretch on Paradis she settles into a white long-sleeved shirt with dark trousers.

Her Jaw Titan is a runt among Titans at five meters, marked by an oversized head, unkempt hair, beady black eyes, a broad nose, pointed ears, and elongated arms. Fangs and claws are its signature weapons, and unlike the Female Titan it shows nothing recognizably feminine. Before she consumed Marcel Galliard, her Pure Titan was gaunter, ribs pressing through its skin, with ordinary human teeth rather than sharpened ones.

On first meeting, Ymir reads as abrasive: selfish, sarcastic, quick to pick fights and slow to cooperate. Underneath sits a stubbornly decent streak she rarely advertises. She accepted full blame for the Eldian cult even after its members sold her out, pulled Erwin Smith away from a Titan despite holding him responsible for wrecking her plans, and carried genuine guilt over unknowingly devouring Marcel Galliard. Around Historia Reiss the warmth surfaces openly.

Few characters read people as sharply. She identifies Historia's hunger for a heroic death, the fracture in Reiner's psyche, and the real reason Sasha buries her rural accent under stiff formal speech, and she needles all of them for refusing to be honest with themselves. Pride is her organizing principle: after regaining her body she resolves to live entirely for her own sake, treating that defiance as the sweetest revenge on everyone who despised or exploited her. That same pride keeps her silent about Marley and the truth of the Titans, and it feeds the sense of debt that ultimately sends her back to Reiner and Bertolt, whose attack on the Wall had freed her from her nightmare, even knowing the trip means her death.

She begins as a nameless Eldian street child begging in Marley until a man christens her Ymir, after the ancestral Ymir Fritz, and installs her as the figurehead of a worship cult. Knowing she has no royal blood, she plays the part anyway to give her followers joy. When the Public Security Authorities break up the group, her benefactor accuses her of deceiving him; she owns the name rather than deny it, is stoned in the streets, and is shipped to the edge of Paradis Island to be transformed into a Pure Titan. Roughly sixty years pass in what she later calls a nightmare without end, until in 845 her Titan attacks four young Warriors bound for Wall Maria. Marcel Galliard shoves Reiner clear and is eaten in his place, and the Jaw Titan passes to her, restoring her mind and body. She slips inside Wall Sheena, survives two years as a thief, and overhears churchmen discussing a discarded royal child renamed Krista Lenz. Curiosity about the girl drives her into the military.

In the 104th Training Corps she attaches herself to Krista, and during a blizzard exercise she sees through the girl's plan to die nobly hauling the unconscious Daz. Ymir reveals she knows Krista's real history, secretly uses her Titan to carry Daz to safety, and extracts a promise: when the truth comes out, Krista will reclaim her true name. She finishes outside the top ten, reportedly slacking on purpose so Krista could take the tenth slot and the safety of the Military Police.

After Trost she follows Krista into the Survey Corps. At Utgard Castle her ability to read a herring can's foreign script draws Reiner's suspicion, and when nocturnal Titans overrun the tower she finally transforms, telling Krista to live proudly before leaping into the horde. She topples the tower onto the Titans, is nearly eaten in the aftermath, and survives thanks to Hange's squad; Krista rewards her with her true name, Historia. Bertolt's Colossus Titan then swallows her during his and Reiner's escape with Eren. In the forest she deduces the Warriors' circumstances, bargains for Historia's protection, and snatches Historia in her Titan's jaws during the pursuit. When Eren's Founding Titan power erupts, she judges that Historia will be safe inside the Walls and turns back to rescue the overwhelmed Reiner and Bertolt, calling herself their souvenir and vowing to return what she took.

In Marley she writes Historia a farewell letter, then submits to being eaten by Marcel's brother Porco, passing the Jaw Titan on. Her story does not quite end there: during the Rumbling, Ymir Fritz raises her Titan among the dead inheritors defending Eren, and when Zeke wakes the inheritors' wills inside the paths, she turns her Titan against the horde, saving Reiner from a War Hammer Titan and fighting on until Eren's nape is cut.
