Attack Titan

On the sea wall of Marley, the Owl's rampage ends with every Public Security officer dead. The man behind the Titan frees Grisha from his bonds and gives his name as Eren Kruger, a Subject of Ymir who spent decades masquerading as a Marleyan, torturing and condemning thousands of his own people to preserve his cover. Grisha, broken by the loss of the Restorationists and haunted by his failure to save his wife Dina, demands answers. Kruger confesses his sins, recounts watching his own family burn after a failed royal uprising, and explains why Grisha was chosen: his hatred, and the fact that as a boy he walked beyond the walls.

Kruger's final assignment is blunt. Grisha must eat him, inherit his Titan, infiltrate the island, and one day seize the Founding Titan from a King who swore never to wield it, a vow Kruger sees as abandoning the Eldian people. Thirteen years is all any inheritor gets, the span Ymir Fritz herself lived after gaining her power, and Kruger's time is up. Before injecting Grisha, he urges him to love someone inside the walls and start a family, then startles himself by naming Mikasa and Armin, people from memories that are not his own. He tells Grisha the Titan's name: throughout every era it has pressed ahead in pursuit of freedom, the Attack Titan.

In the present, Eren does the arithmetic of the Curse of Ymir and realizes fewer than eight years remain to him. At a military hearing on the basement discoveries, Hange concludes the enemy is no longer just Titans but perhaps the whole world beyond the walls. When discussion turns to how Eren once commanded Pure Titans, he privately connects it to the moment he struck Dina Fritz's Titan, royal blood in Titan form, and hides the realization to shield Historia from what the military might do with it.

Kruger reveals his identity, his infiltration of Marley Public Security, and his childhood survival of a purge against the old royal remnant. He explains the thirteen-year limit on the Nine Titans, the paths connecting all Subjects of Ymir, and the coordinate where those paths converge. Grisha accepts the mission and the Attack Titan's name is spoken for the first time.

Present-day scenes carry equal weight: Levi releases Eren and Mikasa early from confinement, Historia reads Ymir's farewell letter and receives a flash of her memories, and the hearing establishes that a non-royal might tap the Founding Titan by touching a royal-blooded Titan. Eren's sudden outburst mid-hearing, waved off as adolescence, marks the moment he grasps that secret and chooses to keep it.

Wit Studio and Production I.G produced this 58th episode, the 21st of season 3, directed by Yasuhiro Akamatsu and written by Hiroshi Seko. It adapts the chapters The Attack Titan and Meeting and first aired in Japan on June 24, 2019, with a modified Name of Love animation over the ending.

The featured lore panel explains the Nine Titans as intelligent Titans whose power and memories pass through paths beyond space and time. Kruger's closing description of his Titan, always advancing in search of freedom, doubles as the meaning of the series title itself.
