Bite: The 57th Exterior Scouting Mission, Part 3

The chase through the giant forest continues, and Levi's squad grows desperate for orders. Instead of engaging, Levi fires an acoustic round and reminds his soldiers that keeping Eren alive is the whole mission. Eren cannot stomach it; reinforcements behind them are dying one by one, and he believes only this squad can bring the Female Titan down. When Petra and Oruo shut down his protests, he moves to bite his hand and transform. Levi neither forbids nor commands it. He frames it as a choice no one can predict the outcome of, telling Eren to pick whichever path he will regret least.

Eren's memory drifts back to the transformation trials. In a dried-up well, with Hange eagerly waiting, he bit himself bloody and nothing happened. Later, reaching for a dropped teaspoon, he sprouted a partial Titan body without meaning to, and his squadmates instantly ringed him with drawn blades. Levi explained afterward that he chose these veterans precisely because they assume the worst; suspicion kept them alive. Hange's analysis of the spoon, gripped but unharmed by the Titan hand, showed that transformation requires a clear purpose. Understanding they had wronged him, each squad member bit their own hand as self-punishment and asked Eren for mutual trust.

That memory settles it. Eren stays on his horse, apologizing under his breath to the dying soldiers behind them. Moments later the Female Titan runs straight into Erwin's ambush, pinned by a storm of grappling-hook restraints. While the squad rides on under Eld's command, Levi joins Erwin, both men eager to learn who is hiding inside the captured Titan.

Levi discloses the squad's true orders and forces Eren's dilemma: transform and fight alone, or trust the team and keep riding. The flashback sequence covers the failed well experiment, the accidental partial transformation triggered by the teaspoon, the squad's hostile reaction, and Hange's conclusion that intent drives Eren's power.

Squad Levi's hand-biting apology cements the bond that lets Eren choose trust in the present. The pursuit ends when Erwin springs the special target restraining weapon, capturing the Female Titan alive, a goal Eren had not realized the Scouts were pursuing.

Episode 19 of season 1, produced by Wit Studio and Production I.G, directed by Kiyoshi Fukumoto and Tomomi Ikeda from Noboru Takagi's script. It adapts the manga chapters Bite and The Easy Path and premiered in Japan on August 18, 2013. Crunchyroll carried it under a variant title referencing the 57th Expedition Beyond the Walls.

The information segment explains the signal flare system: red for a Titan sighting, green to steer the formation, black for an Abnormal. A small animation inconsistency in the broadcast version swaps Hange's glasses for goggles between shots during the teaspoon scene.
