Bystander

Life inside the Walls has steadied since the coup. Historia, now queen, runs a farm for orphans and the poor, earning the nickname Cattle-Farming Goddess, while Eren's hardening experiments feed a new anti-Titan device Hange dubs the executioner from hell, a corridor trap that crushes Titan napes with a dropped log and costs no soldiers' lives. Fresh recruits like Marlo and Floch fill out the diminished Scout Regiment. At dinner, Jean's teasing jogs Eren's memory: the mysterious soldier from Grisha's memories is Keith Sadies, the Cadet Corps commandant and Erwin's predecessor.

Visited by Levi, Hange, and the squad, Keith tells his story as a self-described onlooker. Twenty years back, he found a disoriented Grisha Jaeger standing outside the gate of Wall Maria with no memory of how he got there. Keith covered for him, introduced him to society, and watched the amnesiac doctor charm everyone, including Carla, the bar worker Keith quietly admired. Grisha's remark that only chosen people could do the Scouts' work lodged in Keith's mind and curdled into obsession. He rose to command the regiment, achieved nothing but casualties, heard his own soldiers wish for Erwin instead, and exploded at Carla when she suggested he retire, ranting that ordinary people change nothing.

Keith was present when Wall Maria fell and watched Grisha lead the newly orphaned Eren into the woods, warned not to follow. At dawn he found the boy alone and unconscious and carried him to shelter. Hange scolds Keith for dressing up an inferiority complex as humility, but Eren accepts the verdict that neither of them is special, taking comfort in being a special man's son. Keith offers one better memory: Carla insisting her boy did not need to surpass anyone, because being born made him special already. Left alone, Keith recalls sabotaging cadet Eren's balance gear in a failed bid to wash him out, and admits he changed nothing at all.

The post-coup timeskip is established: Historia's orphanage farm, the luminous ore from the Underground Chapel lighting homes, the executioner from hell demonstration, and Eren's nosebleeds from overusing his powers. Marlo's transfer to the Scouts and Floch's introduction round out the new roster, while Conny plans a visit to Ragako and Eren wonders whether all Titans are simply tormented people.

Keith's flashback carries the reveal chain: meeting Grisha outside Wall Maria, Hannes helping keep the discovery unreported, Grisha curing the Shiganshina plague and marrying Carla, Keith's failed command, his resignation in Erwin's favor, and the fall of Wall Maria, ending with Keith retrieving young Eren from the forest where Grisha passed on his Titan. Carla's speech about her son's worth closes the episode's emotional arc.

Keith's admission that he could not change a single thing, making him a mere bystander to the Jaeger family's story, gives the episode both its title and its epigraph.
