Can't Look into His Eyes Yet: Eve of the Counterattack, Part 1

Word of a Titan fighting for humanity splits public opinion along the Walls. Wall Rose hails Eren as a savior who might win back Wall Maria; the wealthier interior dreads refugees, food shortages, and the chance the monster changes sides. To head off internal conflict, supreme commander Dhalis Zachary convenes a tribunal that will decide, publicly, what becomes of the boy.

From his chained spot in the courtroom, Eren hears Military Police commander Nile Dawk call for his execution after a thorough study of his body, with Pastor Nick shrieking for death on the spot. Erwin Smith counters with a simple offer: induct Eren into the Scout Regiment and use his power to retake Wall Maria via the eastern route to Shiganshina. Merchants demand the gates be sealed instead, drawing Levi's contempt, and the hearing degenerates when Rico's honest report surfaces, confirming that Eren's Titan once swung at Mikasa. Nile then exposes the childhood killings that saved Mikasa's life, and the gallery begins asking whether either teenager is even human. Eren erupts, berating the room as cowards who have never faced a Titan and demanding they gamble everything on him.

A gun rises toward Eren, but Levi gets there first, kicking and beating him bloody in front of the court. His point is calculated: only he could put Eren down if the boy turned, so custody should follow capability. Erwin seizes the opening and proposes taking Eren on the coming scouting mission, its outcome to serve as the real verdict. Zachary agrees. Afterward, Erwin apologizes for the staged brutality, Levi asks whether Eren resents him, and Hange, treating his wounds, marvels that the tooth Levi knocked loose has already grown back.

Zachary takes personal charge of the special tribunal after concealing Eren's existence proves impossible. Pyxis and Erwin confer atop the Wall beforehand, with Erwin planning a proposal keyed to how the inquiry unfolds. Mikasa and Armin are summoned as witnesses and Mikasa reluctantly confirms Rico's report against Eren.

Nile weaponizes the robbers' deaths from Eren and Mikasa's childhood; Eren's furious outburst nearly gets him shot; Levi's beating and his challenge to the court flip the momentum; and Erwin's conditional custody proposal carries the day. The closing scene plants a quiet seed: Eren's regenerated tooth hints at how far his Titan biology reaches.

The 14th episode of season 1, produced by Wit Studio and Production I.G, directed by Shinpei Ezaki and Keisuke Onishi from Yasuko Kobayashi's script, adapting the chapter Still Can't See. It aired in Japan on July 14, 2013 and marks the debut of the second opening theme, Die Flügel der Freiheit.
