Female Titan: The 57th Exterior Scouting Mission, Part 1

The expedition rolls out beyond the Walls in Erwin's long-distance scouting formation, a human radar that relays Titan sightings by flare so the column can steer around danger. The system mostly works: support squads handle early contacts, and even a crawling Titan that surprises Sasha inside the formation is led away into a tree. Riding alone on the wing, Armin relays signals until a black flare announces an abnormal. Nearby veterans Ness and Cis dispatch one such Titan cleanly, then spot a 14-meter class closing behind them.

This new Titan accelerates without warning, deflects their coordinated strikes, and kills both men with deliberate, practiced motions. It overtakes the fleeing Armin, knocks him from his horse, then does something no Titan should: it peels back his hood, studies his face, and departs without harming him. Reiner brings Armin a fresh horse, and Jean arrives with news that a sudden Titan swarm has annihilated the right wing.

Armin lays out his theory: the Female Titan protects its nape, kills selectively, and checks identities, meaning a human like Eren pilots it, probably searching for him. The three realize the command staff distributed contradictory copies of Eren's position, and Armin guesses the real answer is the formation's rear. To buy the others time, they don their hoods and give chase. The Titan sidesteps Jean's attack and nearly kills him until Armin's improvised scream, that it had crushed the "suicidal maniac," freezes it in place. Reiner's follow-up attack ends with him caught in its fist, but he carves his way free, grabs Armin, and escapes. Rather than pursue, the Female Titan rises and sprints toward the rear of the formation, exactly where Eren is supposed to be.

The 57th expedition departs and Erwin's flare-relay formation initially keeps the column clear of Titan contact.

A fast, intelligent 14-meter Titan kills the veterans Ness and Cis with counters no mindless Titan could manage, then confirms Armin's identity by lifting his hood before leaving him alive.

An army of Titans wipes out the formation's right wing, arriving from the same direction as the Female Titan.

Armin concludes a human operates the Titan and that it hunts Eren, whose position was deliberately listed differently across the soldiers' copies of the plan.

Armin, Jean, and Reiner delay the Female Titan; Armin's bluff about Eren's death stuns it, Reiner survives its crushing grip by cutting free, and the Titan departs toward the formation's rear.
