Midnight Sun

Eren stands over what remains of Armin when the Cart Titan bounds across Shiganshina's rooftops carrying Zeke Jaeger. Holding his blade to the unconscious Bertholdt's throat, Eren studies the stranger's face, notices the transformation marks, and grasps that this is the Beast Titan. Zeke tells the boy that both of them count among Grisha Jaeger's victims, and the resemblance to his father unsettles Eren. Spotting Levi alive atop the Wall, Zeke declares their fight a draw and retreats, promising to return one day and rescue his brother.

Elsewhere, Hange interrogates the limbless Reiner, who surrenders a metal case containing Ymir's letter for Christa. As Hange moves to cut his throat, Jean intervenes, remembering Erwin's guidelines for the regiment's lone syringe of Titan spinal fluid: it can steal an enemy's power and drag one dying soldier back from the edge. Mikasa is dispatched to locate Levi and the serum, but before Hange can finish Reiner off, the Cart Titan snatches him away in its jaws.

On the rooftop, Armin gasps for breath, and Levi agrees to let him consume Bertholdt. Then Floch arrives bearing the barely living Erwin, and Levi takes the syringe back, choosing the commander who can save humanity. Eren grabs for the case and gets several teeth knocked out for it; Mikasa puts her blade to Levi's throat before Hange wrestles her away, sharing how Moblit died shoving them into a well, and that every soldier eventually faces a farewell. Eren makes one last appeal, describing Armin's dream of the sea and insisting his friend, not himself or Erwin, will be humanity's savior. Alone with both bodies, Levi hears the delirious Erwin raise his hand to ask his father a schoolboy's question, and realizes it would be crueler to drag him back into hell. He administers the injection to Armin, whose Pure Titan devours a screaming Bertholdt. Erwin passes quietly, finally at rest, and Armin emerges from the steaming nape whole again.

Eren meets Zeke Jaeger face to face for the first time, registering both his Titan marks and his uncanny likeness to Grisha; Zeke withdraws with a promise to come back for him.

Reiner survives interrogation when the Cart Titan carries him off, costing the Scouts their captured Warrior along with Ymir's letter still in Hange's custody.

Floch delivers the dying Erwin, transforming the serum decision into a standoff that turns Eren and Mikasa against Levi.

Hange talks Mikasa down by invoking Moblit's sacrifice and the necessity of letting the dead go.

Levi chooses to release Erwin from his role as humanity's devil; Armin receives the injection, devours Bertholdt Hoover, and inherits the Colossal Titan while Erwin dies in peace.

This is the 18th episode of season 3 and the 55th Attack on Titan installment overall, from Wit Studio and Production I.G. It reached Japanese screens on June 3, 2019 and American ones on June 29, 2019, adapting the Cleaver and Midnight Sun chapters of the Return to Shiganshina arc.

Hiroyuki Tanaka and Shintaro Itoga co-directed, with Hiroshi Seko writing. The episode runs without an opening theme and closes on Name of Love. Its informational panel outlines the injection conditions: the serum works best on a mortally wounded candidate positioned near an incapacitated holder of Titan power, allowing both revival and the theft of that power. The episode bridges Hero and The Basement.
