The Beast Titan turns boulders into artillery and grinds the Scout Regiment down to a handful of terrified recruits. With the Colossal Titan closing in beyond the Wall and every option exhausted, Erwin Smith trades his lifelong dream for one final gamble: a suicide charge to put Levi within killing distance of Zeke.
Inside Shiganshina, the Colossal Titan rips houses from their foundations and rains them across the district as burning debris. Armin, paralyzed by having misread Bertholdt's intentions, hands command to Jean, who conserves the squad's gas by riding atop Eren's Titan toward the river and orders Armin to keep thinking. Their assault goes badly. Eren grapples the Colossal Titan's foot and is kicked clear up onto Wall Maria's crest; Mikasa's attempt to plant a Thunder Spear in Bertholdt's nape is swatted away by a steam blast that leaves her bleeding and Conny choking. The Armored Titan then stirs back to life below.
Beyond the gate, the situation is worse. Zeke's Beast Titan shatters boulders into shrapnel volleys, shredding the front line of buildings and pulping wave after wave of Scouts in bloody mist. When the barrage subsides, only Erwin, Levi, and the horse-guarding recruits remain. Erwin sees the trap in hindsight: the smaller Titans herded the regiment into one killing field. Levi proposes salvaging something, waking Eren, loading survivors onto his Titan, and fleeing while Levi distracts the enemy, but concedes nobody is likely to live through the day. Among the recruits, Floch breaks down, unable to see meaning in dying to feed horses no one will ride home.
Erwin reveals the alternative he did not want to speak aloud: a mounted decoy charge, every recruit and Erwin himself at the front, hurling themselves at the Beast Titan so Levi can slip along the line of standing Titans and cut Zeke down. It means dying without ever opening the basement, and Erwin confesses that every sacrifice he has ordered was in service of proving his father's theory, asking whether his dream was only a childish delusion. Levi kneels and makes the trade explicit: abandon the dream, lead the recruits into hell, and the Beast Titan dies by Levi's hand. Erwin smiles. His speech turns the recruits' despair into resolve; the living give meaning to the dead, and the dead entrust their meaning to those who follow. The charge rides out under cover of signal flares that spoil Zeke's aim, until a stone rips through Erwin's abdomen mid-cry and tears him from the saddle.
Armin freezes under the pressure of command and passes leadership of Levi Squad to Jean inside Shiganshina.
The squad's coordinated Thunder Spear attack on the Colossal Titan fails against Bertholdt's steam emissions, and Eren is kicked onto the top of Wall Maria.
The Beast Titan's shrapnel bombardment annihilates the Scout forces outside the gate, leaving only Erwin, Levi, and the raw recruits alive.
Levi promises to kill the Beast Titan in exchange for Erwin surrendering his dream and personally riding at the head of the recruits' sacrificial decoy charge.
Erwin's rallying speech reframes the meaning of dying soldiers, the charge begins under signal-flare cover, and Erwin takes a boulder fragment through the abdomen as Levi closes on Zeke.
This is the 16th episode of season 3 and the 53rd Attack on Titan installment overall, produced by Wit Studio and Production I.G. Japanese broadcast came May 20, 2019, the American airing June 15, 2019. It draws on three Return to Shiganshina arc chapters: Perfect Game, The Nameless Soldiers, and Promise.
Tetsuya Wakano directed and Hiroshi Seko wrote the episode, which opens with Shoukei to Shikabane no Michi and closes with Name of Love. The informational segment addresses the Colossal Titan's steam: because a Titan's special abilities burn its own body as fuel, the emissions are believed to consume muscle tissue and therefore cannot last forever, a limit that becomes decisive in the following episode. Descent precedes it and Hero follows.

Naruto vs Luffy with the twist nobody asked for: Luffy tickled Hinata on date night, and she kind of liked it. We break down the whole fight and commit to a winner....

There are no women on Namek. That isn't an oversight, it's the biology. Why we handed Piccolo the one thing his own species rules out, and why it had to be trap soul....
