The Other Side of the Wall

The military debates what to do with the revelations in Grisha Jaeger's journals. Over Military Police objections, Pyxis argues that concealment would make them no better than the old monarchy, and Queen Historia rules that the people deserve the memories King Reiss stole from them. Reactions across the Walls run from acceptance to denial to conspiracy theories, as the reporters Roy and Peaure tell Hange and Levi over tea. Roy's darkest thought lingers: the outside world now looks at the people of the Walls the way they once looked at Titans.

At the medal ceremony for the nine survivors of Shiganshina, Floch refuses to soften anything. He tells Hitch that Marlo died regretting his choices, then declares to the whole group that Erwin should have been revived instead of Armin, blaming Eren, Mikasa, and Levi for letting sentiment decide. He needles Jean and Conny for standing by, and even Armin quietly agrees with him. When Eren tries to lift Armin's spirits with talk of the wonders beyond the Walls, his father's memories intrude and choke off the word freedom. Kissing Historia's hand at the ceremony triggers another vision: Grisha in the Reiss chapel, begging the true King to save the Walls before Titans devour his family.

Seasons turn. The great sledge outside Trost falls silent, the military declares Wall Maria free of Titans, and refugees go home. Six years after the fall, the Scouts ride beyond the Walls, passing a Titan so withered it can barely crawl; Eren touches it and recognizes a patriot shipped to this so-called paradise. Beyond the dunes where the Restorationists were transformed, the regiment reaches the sea. Most of them splash in the surf like children, Armin marveling that his book was right about the endless salt water. Eren stands apart, staring at the horizon that once meant freedom to him, and asks whether wiping out every enemy waiting across that water would finally make them free.

Historia authorizes full public disclosure of the truth about the world, humanity beyond the Walls, and the Eldian past. Floch's public accounting divides the survivors, forcing Eren, Mikasa, Jean, Conny, and Armin to confront the choice made on the rooftop in Shiganshina. Eren's accumulating memories from Grisha, including the Reiss chapel plea and Fay's fate, begin reshaping his view of the outside world.

The Titans within Wall Maria are exterminated by spring, refugees resettle a year after Trost's battle, and the Scout Regiment's expedition six years after the fall reaches the sea unopposed. The closing exchange inverts the series' founding dream: where Armin sees the proof of his childhood book, Eren sees only enemies across the water.

This 59th episode ends season 3, produced by Wit Studio and Production I.G, written by Yasuko Kobayashi and directed by Tetsuya Wakano, Shintarō Itoga, and series director Tetsurō Araki. It adapts the chapter To the Other Side of the Wall, airing July 1, 2019 in Japan and July 27, 2019 in the United States, between Shoukei to Shikabane no Michi and the ending T-KT.

Creator Hajime Isayama advised the directors and animators on staging the ocean arrival and on how the final scene should land. The information segment presents an Eldian meditation on survival, asking whether flaunting the power of the Titans is truly the only alternative to extermination.
