The World the Girl Saw: The Struggle for Trost, Part 2

Conny shakes Armin out of his stupor amid the ruins of Squad 34. Ymir needles the sole survivor for cowardice, Christa defuses the brewing fight, and Armin wanders off alone, convinced his weakness is exactly why Eren and Mikasa always shielded him. His spiral deepens when he finds Hanna performing CPR on the torn-in-half body of Franz, begging futilely for a life that is already gone.

At Wall Rose's gate, evacuation has stalled because a merchant refuses to move his overloaded cargo wagon, browbeating a Garrison soldier with his connections and declaring his goods more valuable than the crowd's lives. An abnormal Titan comes sprinting toward the bottleneck, outpacing the elite escorts behind it, and Mikasa fells it in a single pass. When the merchant tries the same bluster on her, she advances with a calm promise that his death would let everyone else live; he folds, the civilians pour through, and a little girl's grateful wave earns a salute in return.

The sight of the girl with her mother opens a long memory. Bandits after the last of the Oriental bloodline stab Mikasa's father at the door and beat her mother to death, planning to sell the child. Young Eren, arriving with his father Dr. Jaeger, slips into the cabin posing as a lost boy, kills one trafficker with a hidden blade and guts a second, screaming that they are animals for trading in children. When the third man returns and starts strangling Eren, Mikasa, frozen until that instant, recalls the mantis and the moth and every death she has witnessed, accepts how merciless the world is, and drives a knife through the man's heart from behind.

The flashback closes on the moment that defines Mikasa: scolded by his father, Eren answers that speed mattered more than safety, then winds his own scarf around the shivering, orphaned girl. Grisha invites her to live with the Jaegers, and the gesture cements Eren as her family. Investigating Military Police are left stunned that children carried out the killings.

Back in the present, the evacuation bell rings and Ian Dietrich orders his team up the Wall, privately wondering what forged so ruthless a soldier. Mikasa instead peels off toward the vanguard, resolving that however cruel the world is, she still has a home to fight for, and that anything is possible so long as Eren exists.

Sixth episode of the first season, produced by Wit Studio with Production I.G, directed by Tomomi Ikeda and scripted by Hiroshi Seko. Japan saw it on May 12, 2013, with the US broadcast following on June 7, 2014. It adapts the chapters A Dull Glow in the Midst of Despair and The World that the Girl Saw; Crunchyroll lists it under an alternate title reading Battle for Trost (2).

The information segment covers ultrahard steel, the flexible anti-Titan blade material that can only be refined in the Industrial City's blast furnaces. The episode is bookended by Mikasa's defining line about living in a cruel world.
