The concept of paths grew from a puzzle: whenever one of the Nine Titans dies without being devoured, its power reappears in a random newborn among the Subjects of Ymir, no matter how far away or unrelated that child is. Something unseen must link the entire race, and Eren Kruger passes this understanding to Grisha Yeager, describing unseen channels that one past inheritor claimed to have witnessed directly.

These channels carry far more than inheritance. Memories and wills flow between Subjects of Ymir, the flesh and bone that materialize into a Titan's body arrive through them, a Titan's scream transmits commands along them, while the power of the Titans itself moves through the network. Blood strengthens the connection: memory transfer comes easiest within families, Karl Fritz's vow renouncing war binds only his own royal descendants, and the Ackerman clan shares its own path, granting awakened members the accumulated combat instincts of every Ackerman before them.

Physical space means nothing to the network, and time appears equally irrelevant. Kruger somehow held memories of Armin Arlert and Mikasa Ackerman years before either was born, a phenomenon Grisha could only compare to magic.

Though imperceptible in the ordinary world, paths become visible inside the world of the paths, a realm of white soil beneath a sky streaked with ribbons of light resembling an aurora. Time behaves strangely there; Zeke Yeager describes an experience that felt like years yet ended in an instant. The realm came into being at the death of Ymir Fritz, whose soul has dwelt there for two millennia as a small girl carrying a pail of water. From that place she sculpts every Titan body whenever the power is invoked, shaping flesh from the realm's earth, and royal blood can command her; Zeke regards her as a slave stripped of any will of her own.

Where paths intersect lies a "coordinate," and the point where every path of every Subject of Ymir crosses is the Coordinate itself, the Founding Titan. From that nexus the Founder can rewrite the memories of Ymir's people, alter their bodies, transform them into Titans up to Colossus scale, and issue commands to all Titans everywhere. Tom Ksaver frames it starkly: every Subject of Ymir is effectively an extension of the Founding Titan's body. Within the realm the Coordinate appears as a towering pillar of light that branches like a tree. In its earliest days it bore only three paths, likely one for each of Ymir's daughters, Maria, Rose, and Sheena, with new strands sprouting as their descendants multiplied and Ymir's power split into the Nine Titans.

Zeke builds a lesser imitation. Any Subject of Ymir exposed to his spinal fluid becomes tethered to his Beast Titan through a path, marked with a coordinate of his own, letting him trigger their transformations and command the resulting Titans like a counterfeit Founder.

Several figures cross into the realm during the final war. A dying Zeke, torn apart by a Thunder Spear blast, is packed into a Titan's belly and wakes on the white sand as Ymir Fritz rebuilds his body from the surrounding earth. Eren Yeager arrives when his severed head touches his brother, and Zeke reasons that Founding Titan inheritors are drawn there to command Ymir. Ymir herself, the Jaw Titan inheritor, glimpsed the light trails upon gaining her power in 845 and called the sight freedom spread out before her.

Once Eren seizes the Founder's full power, the paths become his instrument. He broadcasts a telepathic declaration to every Eldian announcing the Rumbling, later pulls each of his friends into the realm one by one to reveal that the power of the Titans will vanish when he dies, and summons the assembled alliance to tell them he will neither negotiate nor stop. In the realm's timeless space Armin and Zeke debate the meaning of life until visions of past inheritors break their despair, and Eren shows Mikasa an imagined life where he abandoned the Rumbling to grow old peacefully at her side.
