Wall

Twin plumes of transformation vapor rise over Stohess, and the response splits along two commanders. Nile sends only Marlowe, Hitch, and a handful of others until Erwin orders every available soldier deployed under the assumption Titans are loose in the city, a certainty that makes Nile suspect the Survey Corps commander knows more than he admits. Annie's Female Titan, fleeing, smashes through the roof of a chapel mid-service, killing most of the Wall worshipers inside while Minister Nick staggers up from the rubble in disbelief.

The chase carries destruction across the district. Annie swats pursuing soldiers with debris from a toppled bell tower until Mikasa, blaming her for Levi's injury, slashes her face. When flat open ground threatens to leave the pursuers exposed, Eren arrives in Titan form, fully in control this time, and closes for a fistfight. He recalls their sparring days as trainees, the only moments Annie ever seemed to enjoy herself, and wonders what drove her to betray everyone. Their exchange is savage: her low kick severs his leg below the knee, he answers with a one-legged leap into a headlong blow, and when her counter-kick smashes his skull against a building, his teeth clamp onto her leg and refuse to release.

Annie wrenches free and sprints for the Wall, hardening her fingertips into claws to climb it, a trick that stuns everyone watching. Armin, realizing gear alone cannot catch her, has Eren hurl Mikasa upward. Her blades strip the fingers from both of Annie's hands, and the Female Titan plummets. Falling, Annie remembers her father's plea from her childhood in Liberio: whatever happens, whoever hates her, he will stand with her, so long as she promises to come home. Eren tears her from the Titan's nape with tears on her face, and in a burst of light she encases herself in crystal, silencing every question the military hoped to ask. High above, Mikasa watches damaged sections of the Wall flake away, and freezes: a colossal face stares out from within the structure.

Erwin orders a full mobilization in Stohess, deepening Nile's suspicion that he orchestrated events.

Annie's flight kills Wall Church worshipers and devastates the district as Eren fights her hand-to-hand in Titan form.

Annie hardens her fingers to scale the Wall, and Mikasa, thrown by Eren, severs her grip and brings her down.

A memory of her father's unconditional promise plays as Annie falls; captured, she crystallizes herself before interrogation.

The battle damage exposes a Titan embedded within the Wall.

Third chapter of volume 8 and 33rd overall, published in Japan on May 9, 2012 and in English on October 29, 2013, within The Female Titan arc. The anime adapted it as Wall: Assault on Stohess, Part 3.

The chapter closes the Female Titan storyline with two of the manga's defining images: Annie's tear-streaked face inside her crystal and the Wall Titan's exposed head, the first physical hint that the Walls themselves are built from Titans. Annie's flashback to her father is the earliest sympathetic window into a Warrior's home life.
