Charlotte Beatrix Marie Rhody Wyndham

Charlotte is a soft-spoken, retiring princess whom her own father calls shy and reluctant to leave the palace at Wyndham. She despises war and the hunt as nothing more than men delighting in slaughter, and has no patience for the extravagant parties held while the fighting grinds on. Although she dismisses herself as a sheltered creature who knows nothing and can do nothing, she turns out to be strikingly resolute: she defies her stepmother to grant Griffith her favor, feeds the Band of the Falcon intelligence, bribes a guard to cover a rescue, flings herself before a poisoned dart aimed at Griffith, and later drafts a law to establish orphanages.

Casca observes that for all her rank she carries none of the usual noble arrogance, seeming instead warm and gracious, even apologizing to the mercenaries for her father's treatment of Griffith. Her devotion holds through his torture and disfigurement. The love she bears her father sours into loathing once he jails and mutilates Griffith and then moves to force himself on her; she stops calling him father altogether, yet still sheds tears when he dies.

Charlotte's gifts lean toward the refined and domestic. She embroiders with real skill, can whip up sweets even on campaign with Anna lending a hand, and pours tea with practiced poise. She is far from helpless, though. Quick reflexes let her catch sight of a poisoned Bakiraka dart bound for Griffith and knock it aside, and she once fought her father fiercely enough to bloody him. For all that, a genuine physical frailty clings to her: a prisoner's leer leaves her too shaken to walk, forcing Guts to carry her, and the mere sight of Griffith seemingly assassinated makes her faint outright.

Charlotte first crosses paths with Griffith when she stumbles near him and he catches her at the waist, a courtesy that earns him a blow from her uncle Julius. The two draw closer during the Autumn Hunt, where he shows her how to whistle through a leaf and steadies her panicked horse, just before an assassin's bolt slams into him and is turned aside by his beherit. At a banquet in Promrose Hall she hangs on his ideals and his poise, never guessing that Casca looks on with envy or that Griffith has just ordered the deaths of Julius and Adonis.

Before Griffith rides off for the war-ending campaign, she presses a lodestone pendant on him and begs Casca to bring him home safe. Once Doldrey falls, Griffith comes to her chamber and the two lie together, but a handmaiden's whispered report sends her father storming in. Discovering the truth, the king has Griffith thrown into the Tower of Rebirth and tortured, then, driven by his own jealous lust, moves to rape his daughter and is stopped only by a kick to the face.

A year on, Charlotte helps Guts, Casca, Judeau, and Pippin slip into Wyndham to free Griffith, talking their way past guards and refusing to be left behind even as a possible hostage. When they reach his cell, the wreck that torture has made of him leaves her stunned. In the flight out she takes a poisoned Bakiraka dart in the arm that was meant for Griffith and is handed back to the assassins in exchange for the antidote, coaxing an empty promise from her father to set Griffith free.

Across the Conviction and Millennium Falcon arcs she withdraws in grief, then falls into the hands of Emperor Ganishka, who tries to make her bear his child until she cries out for Griffith. Restored to his youthful prime, Griffith appears at her window and carries her off atop a transformed Zodd. Back among the Falcon she declares their engagement before the assembled nobles and installs him as supreme commander of Midland's army. By the Fantasia Arc she has settled into Falconia at his side, hosting tea, pressing for an orphanage, and awaiting the wedding while the pontiff bides his time to marry them.
