Dahl

Dahl wears the robes of a minister, a look the series pairs closely with the Mayor of Koka. Both men share not only the attire but the same cringing terror of the master they serve.

Fear defines Dahl. Though he oversees many executions and voices them publicly on the Count's behalf, he dreads his lord as much as any condemned prisoner does. His unease shows plainly when the Count emerges troubled from his daughter Theresia's room.

From an execution scaffold, Dahl proclaims a woman guilty of heresy and of making a pact with the Devil before she is beheaded. In private he questions whether so many people need to die and whether the Pontiff might intervene, but the Count frames the killings as a service to his remaining subjects. Dahl grows alarmed when Guts appears and cuts into the guards.

He later attends the Count's visit to the wounded Zondark and relays word that an informant has pinpointed the Black Swordsman. When Vargas is hauled to the scaffold, Dahl reports that the man carries no beherit. He also voices worry over how the Count's mood darkens after presenting the caged Puck to Theresia.

When Guts reaches the throne room, Dahl and a body of guards block the way, offering the swordsman a chance to surrender before the archers loose their bolts. Guts carves through the archers and the boastful Gerico with ease, leaving Dahl defenseless and kicked aside. Amid the duel that follows, Dahl throws on Guts' black cloak to hide behind a pillar. The Count, catching sight of the cloth, strikes it down, killing his own servant by mistake.
