Because Guts still wants the Mandragora heart owed to him under a deal with Balzac, Dunteth offers his group's aid, viewing the relic as leverage against the baron. The plan comes apart at the village: when one of his men yanks a Mandragora from the ground, the creatures fly into a rage and kill Dunteth.
