Farnese de Vandimion

A young noblewoman of nineteen, Farnese carries the fair, refined look of her station, with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a slim frame of around 162 centimeters. Early on she wears her hair in twintails, which she severs as a vow of her break from the church. She has a recurring habit of clapping her hands over her mouth whenever something horrifies her. Her attire changes across her journey, from the plated armor of a knight-commander to the petaled robes of a mage.

Farnese's inner life was warped by a childhood of neglect and terror. Made to face her fears alone, she learned to master them by embracing them, and the nighttime burnings of heretics that once frightened her became a source of secret, sadistic pleasure she would spend years denying. As commander she showed little warmth and took open delight in the stake, yet she felt genuine pity for those she judged innocent. She questioned the justice of her acts even as she talked herself into believing them righteous, drawing comfort from Mozgus that cruelty done in faith was no sin.

Guts overturned all of it. A single night of supernatural terror at his side cracked her convictions and left her both afraid of him and disillusioned with the church. Choosing to follow him, she grew painfully aware of her own weakness beside her companions, but found purpose in caring for Casca and, wielding a magical dagger to protect her, discovered a thrill that pulled her toward magic. In time her admiration for Guts deepened into something tender, sharpening her drive to master her craft, and left her quietly troubled that Casca alone held his heart.

Raised amid neglect in the sprawling Vandimion mansion, with a father consumed by business and a mother lost to indulgence, Farnese grew erratic and unnerving to her keepers. She coped by throwing herself into what scared her, above all the heretic burnings held in the plaza below her window, until fire itself became a comfort. A turning point came when she found the injured boy Serpico in the snow, nursed him, and kept him as her page. Their shared abandonment steadied her. At sixteen she torched the family estate to protest an arranged marriage, and her father answered by shipping her to a convent, where she rose to command the Holy Iron Chain Knights. After the Hundred-Year War she was sent to the Midland border to investigate a prophecy of an angel born when the sun died a fifth time. Finding a lake of blood left by the Eclipse, she branded the coming figure a Falcon of Darkness and was tasked with hunting the Black Swordsman tied to it.

Two years into that search her knights cornered Guts, whom she wrongly believed had murdered villagers, and in the chaos he appeared to fall upon her rapier. Her interrogation and whipping of him went nowhere, and when he seized her as a hostage she lived through a night of supernatural horror, was nearly violated, and, briefly possessed, forced herself upon him before dawn broke the spell. Reassigned to escort the inquisitor Mozgus to Albion, she watched and abetted his brutal torture of accused heretics while her faith frayed. Abducted again by Guts to guide him to Casca, she witnessed his battle with a transfigured Mozgus and a rising tide of malice, and rather than pray she found the courage to help hold it back. At daybreak she stripped the plates from her armor and set out to follow the swordsman with Serpico.

Farnese and Serpico caught up with Guts in the wilds, and she cut off her twintails to prove her resolve before taking charge of Casca's care. Through troll attacks, an encounter with the witch Flora, and a harrowing rescue in Qliphoth where a silver dagger emboldened her, she resolved to study magic under Schierke. At Vritannis her father confined her, and she accepted betrothal to Roderick of Staufen in exchange for a ship, defending him with thorn snakes when the Kushan struck. Aboard the Seahorse bound for Skellig she learned to project her luminous body. In Elfhelm she and Schierke entered Casca's dreamscape through the Corridor of Dreams, journeying across a shattered inner world to gather the fragments of Casca's memory and mend her broken mind, aided at the last by Flora. With Casca restored, Danan honored Farnese as a full mage, gifting her the legendary monarch's old robes and agreeing to teach her healing magic for the mind. By then Farnese had become a prodigy able to summon the Formation of the Four without a circle and to work od-based healing, standing as a genuine magical force beside her mentors when Elfhelm later fell and the Kushan seized the Seahorse.
