Appearance
Gien is drawn with blue eyes and the heavy armor befitting a Tudor cavalry commander. Only the film versions, the Memorial Edition and the opening chapter The Egg of the King, give him a name, and the design he wears there parts ways with how the same figure is rendered in the manga and the 1997 anime.
Personality
The little the tale reveals of him is his fierce pride in his knights. He held his Black Ram Iron Lance riders' valor in the highest regard, driving them to crush through Midland's lines.
History
Leading his cavalry against Midland's battalions, Gien saw his forces start to press their advantage until Guts joined the fray on Midland's behalf and began hewing through his soldiers with little effort. When the commander squared off against the young mercenary in person, a single strike was enough to end him. What was left of his army was then wiped out entirely when the Band of the Falcon, joined by Midland's onrushing reinforcements, fell upon them.
