Guts

Guts is a towering, heavily muscled warrior whose body records a lifetime of violence. His hair is black, marked by a streak of white earned through the strain of the Berserker Armor, and years of combat have cost him his right eye and his left forearm. In place of the missing limb he wears a mechanical prosthetic that conceals a small cannon, while a Brand of Sacrifice scars the side of his neck.

His signature arm is the Dragon Slayer, a monstrous slab of a sword forged from so-called ultimate steel and long enough to serve as a shield against arrows or a rod that turns lightning into the ground. Tempered by the malice of countless slain creatures, it bites into physical and astral flesh alike. When outmatched, Guts dons the Berserker Armor, a cursed suit that overrides his body's own limits and floods him with brutal power at ruinous cost.

Hardened by ceaseless suffering and betrayal since childhood, Guts meets the world with grim realism behind an austere front. Under that guarded exterior lies a compassionate man who softens around the few he trusts, though his dry bluntness never leaves him. A festering inner darkness, embodied by the Beast of Darkness, constantly tempts him to abandon his humanity, yet he refuses to let it swallow his empathy.

As a boy he killed only to stay alive, empty of any real purpose, wanting nothing more than a single person's regard. Joining the Band of the Falcon gave him identity and a drive to one day stand as Griffith's equal. After the Eclipse he curdled into a vengeful loner, spurning connection out of terror that fresh bonds would be torn away like the last. Over time, largely thanks to Puck, he lets fellow travelers back in and comes to treasure them. Through every ordeal, Guts personifies sheer perseverance, rejecting the very idea of a fixed destiny and insisting his choices are his own.

Guts entered the world beneath a gallows tree, drawn from the body of the mother who hung dead above him, then taken in by a mercenary band. Raised by the harsh leader Gambino, he was fighting as a child soldier by nine and was eventually forced to kill the only father figure he had known. Years of wandering as a hireling ended when the charismatic Griffith bested him in a duel and drew him into the Band of the Falcon. Rising to captain of the band's raiders, Guts helped turn the tide of the Hundred-Year War, cut down a hundred foes single-handedly, and dealt the fearsome Zodd a wound no human had landed in three hundred years. Sensing he was only ever a tool for Griffith's ambition, he departed to seek a purpose of his own.

His freedom proved short-lived. A broken, jealous Griffith triggered the Eclipse, offering the entire band as sacrifices to the God Hand. Guts survived a night of slaughter, but only after severing his own arm and being made to watch Griffith, reborn as the demon Femto, violate his lover Casca. Rescued by the Skull Knight and left to care for a mind-shattered Casca, he swore war on all demonkind. For two years he roamed as the dreaded Black Swordsman, hunting apostles with the Dragon Slayer and gaining the elf Puck as an unlikely companion.

In time, Guts came to realize that guarding the regressed Casca mattered more than revenge, and that he could not do it alone. Setting off toward the safe haven of Elfhelm, he gathered a new party around him, including the witch Schierke, the runaway thief Isidro, and the former knights Farnese and Serpico. Along the way he received the Berserker Armor, which let him overpower monstrous apostles at the risk of losing himself entirely, and he clashed again and again with Griffith's resurrected Band of the Falcon.

Crossing a transfigured world into the age of Fantasia, Guts slew the monstrous Sea God and at last reached the island of Skellig. There the sovereign Danan restored Casca's shattered mind, though the mere sight of Guts revives her memories of the Eclipse and drives her to terror. His fragile hope collapses when Griffith arrives in Elfhelm, phases past his blade, and carries Casca away, leaving Guts to sink into despair even as his long saga presses on.
