Jarif

Brown-eyed and helmeted at all times, Jarif is never once shown with his face uncovered. Like his fellow Kushans in Griffith's service, he wears the warrior garb of his homeland.

Loyalty to Griffith defines him. He explains that the people of Kushan give their lives to the Falcon's cause because of the enormous debt they feel they owe to the folk of Midland.

His exact combat skills go unrecorded, but leading a squad charged with shielding Falconia and its citizens from monstrous attackers marks him as a capable fighter and commander. He first appears as Laban's Arklow Knights, disguised in Kushan dress, slip out of Wyndham and are halted at a garrison. A mounted messenger rides up bearing orders that wave the refugees through, then names himself Jarif and reveals his role in the Falcon's spy network, noting how many Kushans have sworn themselves to Griffith.

The party is then waylaid by Silat and the tapasa, and Silat mocks the horseman as a turncoat. Jarif, recognizing the ambushers as Bakiraka, invites them to join the Falcon, an offer Silat turns down. The two trade thoughts on a vast, unknowable tide said to be carrying the world toward something new; Silat chooses to hold back and watch whether that new world ever summons his clan, then departs with the Bakiraka. Later, in Falconia, Jarif crosses paths with Laban again while marshaling Kushans to loose a pack of trolls after a medium delivers an oracle, and he is seen battling those trolls as proof that people no longer war on one another but stand together against inhuman threats.
