Roderick

Roderick is a black-haired, dark-eyed nobleman who carries himself with a captain's poise. The Official Guidebook puts him at around twenty-seven by the Fantasia Arc, some 188 centimeters tall and 77 kilograms. Aboard the Seahorse, Puck cheerfully compares his look to that of Long John Silver from Treasure Island.

Quick-thinking, perceptive, and decisive, Roderick is every bit the capable commander. Though Farnese was offered to him only as a piece of her brother Magnifico's plan, and though he knows the dark rumors trailing her, he holds none of it against her and comes to care for her sincerely. He is unfailingly courteous toward women and a smooth talker whose flattery is honest rather than empty, once hailing Farnese as a goddess leading angels for her defense of the ship. Proud of his seamanship yet humble enough to defer to those who know more, he swaps his sword for a silver candelabra the moment Farnese advises it against the Kushan tiger familiars. Above all, he faces the monstrous and catastrophic without flinching, greeting Guts warmly where others recoil.

Roderick enters the story as the centerpiece of Magnifico's plan to win his father's regard: if Farnese agrees to marry him, her companions may use one of his ships to travel wherever they must. He courts her with an odd but sincere compliment, likening her to lilies rather than gilded roses, and asks her to dance at the Vandimion party. When Kushan tiger familiars crash the gathering, he draws his blade to protect the guests, cutting down several familiars and later some daka on his own, and offers the Seahorse as an escape, explaining that Ys, though within the same religious sphere, has no stake in the Holy See's bloodshed.

At sea he shows his true strength as a naval commander, and when Casca falls overboard and Guts sinks after saving her, Roderick dives in and hauls the far heavier swordsman to the surface. He effortlessly outmaneuvers and sinks the three pirate ships led by the hapless Bonebeard, a feat in keeping with the reputation that earned him the name Sailing Prince of Ys after he once sank three Tudor vessels with a single ship. In the Fantasia Arc he holds his crew together against a tentacle-warped Bonebeard and the Sea God itself, personally climbing into the beast's mouth to recover Guts once it is destroyed.

Reaching Elfhelm, he drinks and swaps stories with Guts and Serpico. When Skellig begins to collapse, Roderick evacuates the survivors and orders the Seahorse to sea, later reaching the Kushan Empire, where his ship is seized by soldiers, one of them the returned Rickert. There he braces to fight the intruding Rakshas at the kurultai and marvels at the luminous barrier Farnese raises with the Four Kings of the World, praising his fiancee's power.
