Guardian Angels of Desire (6)

A memory opens on a battlefield strewn with corpses, where a white-haired man draws a younger Guts, still whole in both eyes and arms, out from under the dead. He muses that all people are bound to an unalterable fate and wonders about his own place, admitting Guts is the first he has ever asked. The image of Femto rises behind his face, confirming him as Griffith, the man destined to join the God Hand. In the present, the demons press the Count to brand his daughter while Guts begs Puck to mend his hand. Femto reveals a distant whirlpool of souls, a sliver of Hell, and lays out the Count's choice: sacrifice Theresia to survive, or dissolve into that mass as every Apostle does in death.

Torn and insisting he does not want to die, the Count is overcome by visions of happier days with his wife and daughter and hesitates too long. His remaining life drains away, and the souls surge up to absorb his human form, Vargas among those dragging him down. He and Theresia reach for one another before he vanishes into the void. A tendril of the same souls, lured by the Brand, tries to pull Guts along with the Count, so he loads his cannon arm for a final shot at Femto that bursts harmlessly near the demon yet jolts the souls loose, dropping him to the ground.

His purpose fulfilled, the Count leaves Guts and Femto to trade one last look before Guts, Puck, and Theresia are cast back into the ruined castle. Theresia rejects Puck and says she would rather die than go on, an idea Guts coldly encourages, earning a slap from the elf. He points her to a jagged dagger, but as she moves to cut herself the floor gives way, and Guts throws out his sword for her to seize, which she does, betraying a buried will to live. He swings her to safety, then stares at his own hand, unsettled by what he has done. Enraged, Theresia vows to be the one who kills him, and Guts invites her to try whenever she is ready before limping out. Puck catches the tears Guts quickly wipes away as the two leave the castle and the girl behind.

A flashback confirms the white-haired Griffith as the future Femto and the man who once saved Guts. The Count, unwilling to sacrifice Theresia, is consumed by the souls of Hell as all dead Apostles are. Guts goads the suicidal Theresia into revealing her own will to live, saves her, and departs.

The chapter closes the castle confrontation of the Black Swordsman Arc and cements Griffith's identity with Femto through the battlefield memory. It illustrates the fate awaiting Apostles who refuse to sacrifice and gives a rare glimpse of Guts weeping. Theresia's rescue foreshadows her later pursuit of the Black Swordsman.
