Summary

Searching the emptied camp, Rickert clings to the hope that the band somehow escaped the attack, then finds one of his comrades strung up by his feet, straining to warn him to flee. Behind the dangling man an immense, slug-like creature emerges and begins coiling its bulk around the paralyzed boy, whose legs will not move and whose injured arm leaves him unable to defend himself.
