Overview

Following the slaughter at the Eclipse, Guts leaves the mentally shattered Casca in Godot's care and sets out alone to hunt apostles and the God Hand. Two years into that vendetta, while stalking the Snake Lord, he crosses paths with a small elf named Puck. Guts treats the creature as a nuisance at first, mocking him freely, yet Puck's stubborn cheer and knack for healing slowly wear the swordsman down until he counts the elf a genuine friend. That companionship softens Guts enough to keep trusting others, seeding the larger fellowship to come.

Role

Across the Conviction chapter, the group draws in Farnese, the wavering commander of the Holy Iron Chain Knights who first takes Guts hostage, then abandons her faith after watching him stand unbroken amid despair. Her attendant Serpico trails after her, and a young thief called Isidro attaches himself to learn the Black Swordsman's craft. When Zodd wrecks the cave that once sheltered Casca, Guts and Puck resolve to carry her toward the elven refuge of Elfhelm instead. The winter road nearly breaks him, and in a moment of surrender to his own darkness he assaults Casca, a horror that pushes him to welcome the newcomers rather than risk being alone with her.

The band fills out with the witch's apprentice Schierke after they help fend off trolls near Enoch Village and seal the leaking realm of Qliphoth. Bound for Vritannis to find passage to Skellig, they weather Farnese and Serpico's brief return to the Vandimion household, Guts' savage duel with Serpico, a massacre of party guests by tiger familiars, and a running fight against Kushan pishacha and the emperor Ganishka. The sea captain Roderick then ferries them onward. On the Western Sea after the Great Wave of the Astral World, they battle Bonebeard's pirates and finally the Sea God itself, gaining the half-merrow Isma before reaching Skellig, where the archmage Gedfring leads them to the Flower Storm Monarch's palace and journey's end.

Notable Members

At the core stand Guts, Casca, and Puck, the trio from which everything grows. Later companions include Isidro, Farnese, Serpico, Schierke, the tiny elf Ivalera, the captain Roderick, Magnifico, the veteran Azan, and Isma. The Skull Knight never formally joins yet repeatedly turns up to aid them, notably by pointing Guts toward the Flower Storm Monarch as the one power that might mend Casca's mind. A quiet detail sets Guts apart from Griffith: he tends to walk at the rear of his companions rather than lead from the front.
