Afinar describes the way Findorr Calius, an Arrancar serving Sōsuke Aizen, deliberately damages his own Hollow mask to release greater strength. The mask acts as a restraint, capping his abilities in proportion to how intact it remains.
Mechanics
With the mask whole, Findorr fights at roughly the level of a fifth seat Shinigami. Chipping away a small piece raises him to fourth seat strength, while stripping off the entire lower half lifts him to third seat. Once only the portion shielding his right eye survives, he claims parity with a lieutenant and easily presses Shūhei Hisagi, who was fighting without releasing his Zanpakutō. In his Resurrección, with ninety percent of the mask gone, Findorr boasts of captain-level might, though Hisagi defeats him all the same.
