Appearance

Three small horns break from the middle of his brow, one of the traits that set him apart from most Soul Reapers. His face carries no eyebrows, and the black hair above it stands in short spikes that fan toward each side, split by a sharply defined center line. He is a tall figure who typically throws a researcher's coat over the dark robes worn across the Gotei 13. In his boyhood, roughly a century earlier, he looked like an ordinary child, missing both the horns and the parting in his hairline. After Aizen was brought down, his hair lengthened below the ears and settled into a flatter, downward shape. Years later, following the fall of Yhwach, he took to wearing a green and gold band looped around his neck, hung with assorted gear such as a small vial and the badge marking his rank.

Personality

Composure is his default, and he rarely rattles even when a crisis is unfolding around the labs. By Hiyosu's account, only two figures, Mayuri and Urahara, are able to crack that steadiness. Confident in his own judgment, he will run the research institute on his own initiative when the situation demands it, rather than waiting on his captain's say-so. His scientific talent and reliability make him one of the few staff who mesh well with Mayuri, who has thanked him on several occasions. He also shows genuine warmth toward Nemu, speaking fondly of her as his captain's finest creation.

History

His path began in the Nest of Maggots around a hundred and one years ago, where he crossed trails with Mayuri before both were freed to serve the Twelfth Division, Akon signing on as an assistant inside the research institute. In those early years he took part in cruel experiments on Quincy captives, among them Soken Ishida, the grandfather and teacher of Uryu. He later handled the study of Rukia Kuchiki's artificial body, and its craftsmanship stunned him: no one in the Soul Society, he reasoned, could have built such a shell without being banished for the skill, a conclusion that pointed toward Urahara. As Sosuke Aizen's Arrancar began surfacing in the living world, Akon and his team tracked their spiritual signatures and secured clearance for stationed officers to shed their power limiters. He also patched up Ikkaku Madarame's shattered Bankai, though he could not restore its full edge.

When the Wandenreich stormed the Seireitei, his read on the mounting death toll drove him to reach Ichigo Kurosaki directly, routing the call through Urahara and shouldering personal responsibility for breaking protocol. Amid the chaos he pried open a Garganta from inside the institute so Ichigo could slip through, an act that left him gravely wounded at the hands of the Sternritter Shaz Domino. He pulled through, and by the years after Yhwach's fall he had risen to lieutenant of the Twelfth, stepping into the post once held by Nemu. His expertise runs deep in Reishi energetics and in building the artificial bodies Soul Reapers use in the human world, and in close quarters he leans on a chemical trick named Rong, flinging liquid from a vial to brew an acid fierce enough to dissolve even the damned spirits of Hell.
