Danjirō Obana

Tall and fair-skinned, Danjirō has brown eyes set beneath heavy brows and a mane of wavy, shaggy light-brown hair, gathered into a stubby ponytail behind his head and trailing into sideburns past his ears. Over the usual black robes and a captain's haori he adds gold-trimmed blue gauntlets, lashed to his forearms with red cord, and a blue breastplate worn under the uniform.

By Yhwach's account, Danjirō built a reputation as a savage, cold-blooded killer, a character he lived up to when he cut down the Lichtreich's Quincy during their first assault on Soul Society.

Appointed to lead the newly created 5th Division in the era of the Gotei 13's founding captains, Danjirō threw himself into the defense of Soul Society when the Lichtreich invaded, carving through the enemy ranks and helping break the Quincy army. With the war won and peace settling in, he is said to have grown more grounded, having found things he wished to protect. As one of that first generation of captains, reputedly the strongest the Gotei 13 ever fielded, he commanded formidable spiritual power and a keen blade, felling foes with swift strokes that dismembered them cleanly; its sealed form was a katana bearing a blue hilt beneath a golden guard, though neither its Shikai nor its Bankai was ever shown. In time the captaincy passed on, eventually reaching Shinji Hirako.
