Eleventh Division

The division's emblem is the yarrow flower, its single-word creed is 'Fight,' and its assigned color is lavender. The Eleventh's barracks serve the usual purpose, housing the offices and living space of its members.

This is the company that treats warfare as the whole point of living; to its members a good fight ranks alongside daily meals, and 'might is right' comes close to doctrine. They would sooner perish in glorious battle than fade quietly, and while outsiders see a rowdy pack of ruffians, the men take pride in standing united beneath Kenpachi. An unofficial rule even bars anyone whose Zanpakutō is not a melee type, since the unit sets aside the other Shinigami arts to focus purely on the blade. That reputation for dominating in combat is precisely what draws recruits and marks the Eleventh as the strongest of the divisions.

The Eleventh traces its structure to its founding captain, Yachiru Unohana. Its captaincy is unique: the only way to claim it is the bloodiest of the three routes to captain rank, slaying the sitting captain in front of two hundred members, after which the victor inherits the name Kenpachi, borne by the deadliest Shinigami of each generation. Only one Kenpachi may exist at a time, so the title always passes over a corpse.

Seat oddities run through the division; the Fourth Seat sat empty for years because Yumichika Ayasegawa took the Fifth, whose kanji echoed the Third he coveted but could not hold while Ikkaku Madarame occupied it, an arrangement that only shifted once Ikkaku rose to lieutenant and Yumichika moved to Third Seat. The Eleventh keeps famously warm ties with the Eighth, the two drinking sake together, and it once counted Renji Abarai and Tetsuzaemon Iba among its ranks. Ryōgo Narita's novels name two earlier holders, Sōya Azashiro and Kenpachi Kuruyashiki, who were the eighth and seventh to bear the title.
