Furuoki Ōtogawa

Lean and towering, Furuoki has pale skin, sparse eyebrows, and a fall of greenish-black hair that reaches his chest in a sweep of bangs. Over the usual captain's haori and shihakusho he sometimes added a woven straw hat, its brim trimmed with a pinkish-red ribbon that crossed into an X and trailed down beside his ears. Teal gloves with pale brown palms completed the outfit, and he was often seen with a teal-covered book in hand.

Yhwach recalled him as a figure feared for sheer brutality, an executioner without a trace of warmth. That reputation showed itself plainly in the way he butchered Lichtreich Quincy during their opening assault on Soul Society.

His captaincy dates to the earliest days of the Gotei 13, when the post of 10th Division commander was created for him. Counted among that first wave of captains, often called the mightiest the organization ever fielded, he commanded enormous spiritual power and turned it loose on the invading Lichtreich, helping to break the Quincy offensive. Once the fighting gave way to a lasting peace, he too settled down, having found things he considered worth defending. The powers of his sealed sword were never disclosed, and the seat he pioneered would in time descend toward Isshin Shiba.
