Hierro

Hierro is a defensive trait common to the Arrancar as a whole. Its name pairs the Spanish word for iron with a Japanese reading meaning steel skin, and Viz renders it as Iron Skin. The ability defines much of how these fighters approach combat, since it lets them stand against bladed enemies without a weapon of their own.

An Arrancar's spiritual pressure packs tightly around the body, toughening the flesh until it can turn aside the edge of a Zanpakutō. That density is what allows them to meet armed Soul Reapers head-on and empty-handed. As a rough guideline, the sturdier a fighter's reserves of power, the harder the resulting skin, though the pattern is not ironclad: Nnoitra Gilga boasts the toughest hide among the Espada even while sitting at the fifth rank. Nor is the defense flawless, since a determined opponent can eventually learn to slice through it, as happened when Kenpachi Zaraki wore down Nnoitra in combat.

The trait is shared across the Arrancar as a whole rather than tied to one individual, a baseline gift of their kind. Among the Espada, Nnoitra Gilga stands out for possessing the densest version despite his middling rank, while Kenpachi Zaraki's eventual breakthrough against him shows the limit of even a strong example. A dubbing slip in the English anime once labeled the effect Cero when Ulquiorra Cifer remarked on Ichigo severing Yammy Llargo's arm.
