Kōga Kuchiki

In his prime, Kōga is a fit, sharp-featured man with piercing green eyes and shoulder-length black hair, joined by a long red ponytail and bangs framing the right side of his face. His Shinigami dress adds a long red scarf, a pale lavender sash, and a beaded pendant necklace, along with a white kenseikan headpiece marking his noble standing, which he eventually cuts away when he renounces the Kuchiki name. Centuries of imprisonment leave him withered and gaunt: a mouth mask and gauntlet-like shackles were fixed to him in his cell, and after his escape the mask hangs cut across the nose while his torn shihakushō bares his chest.

Kōga began as a headstrong, self-assured fighter who threw himself into battle to turn the tide, yet he could be humble and even apologetic, and he held his goal of bringing peace so dear that he was willing to die for it. He leaned on the Zanpakutō spirit Muramasa for counsel and quietly craved recognition from his father-in-law, Ginrei Kuchiki, growing hurt and angry when it never came. For all his pride, he once had the discipline to surrender rather than fight when falsely accused. That balance collapsed after his betrayal and imprisonment: convinced Ginrei had lost faith in him, he spiraled into paranoia, deciding everyone hated and envied his power. He came to relish despair, claiming it unlocked his true strength, and settled on the belief that raw power alone imposes order, so that even evil becomes good if it wins. In the end he treated Muramasa as nothing more than a disposable tool, a conviction that drove him to try to destroy his own sword.

Centuries earlier, Kōga, an accomplished warrior and scholar, was welcomed into the Kuchiki Clan as Ginrei's son-in-law and quickly earned wide respect. As the 6th Division's 3rd Seat he single-handedly won a decisive battle for Soul Society's loyalists, drawing praise from Captain-Commander Yamamoto himself, who later placed him in charge of a special force devoted to wiping out the remaining rebels. Ginrei worried over his growing arrogance and urged restraint, but Kōga only resented the lack of open acknowledgment, and Muramasa's steady reassurance fed his overconfidence.

Fearing he would claim all the glory, three elites from a rival faction framed him: they sent their own men to attack him, knowing he would cut them down, then charged him with murder. Ginrei, though skeptical, had to permit the arrest, and Kōga went quietly at his urging. Sentenced to suspension while Muramasa was to be neutralized as too dangerous, he took Ginrei's advice to learn patience as proof of abandonment. Freed from his cell by Muramasa, he tracked down and killed the men who framed him, only to find the act left his emptiness untouched. When Ginrei confronted him, Kōga broke, accusing him of the same jealousy as the others; he tore off his kenseikan, flung it back, and severed his bond with the family. As his killings spread to innocents in Rukongai, his link to Muramasa frayed, until his abuse of the spirit left him unable to release his Zanpakutō at all. Yamamoto and Ginrei finally sealed him with Shisō Keppū, and his revolt went unrecorded in Soul Society's history.

Hundreds of years later Muramasa resurfaces, ignites the Zanpakutō Rebellion, and breaks Kōga's seal in Karakura Town. The moment he wakes, Kōga stabs the overjoyed spirit in fury, then moves to kill him outright before Byakuya Kuchiki intervenes. Learning that Byakuya is the clan's current head, Kōga resolves to sever his tie to the Kuchiki by slaying its leader, and shatters the last of Muramasa's blade, casting the spirit away entirely. Wielding one of the very halberds used to seal him, he trades blows with Byakuya on even footing and unleashes Kidō such as Hyōga Seiran, freezing him in ice, and binding him with his Spiritual Threads. His illusions, which flood all five senses with false attacks and phantom clones, nearly finish Byakuya, who survives only because he refuses to close his heart and because Senbonzakura releases on its own. Byakuya answers with his Bankai and Senkei, whose blades always find their target through the illusions, and closes with Shūkei: Hakuteiken. Left gravely wounded yet still insisting on his own supremacy, Kōga calls for Muramasa, forgetting he had cut their bond, and receives no reply before sinking into the lake to die.
