Pupples

Pupples, sometimes rendered Papyrus, is a particular brand of Soul Candy, the everyday name for the artificial souls known formally as Gikon. Among the assorted Soul Candy varieties, it stands out as the third most sought-after on the market.

Gikon are manufactured souls that Shinigami scientists devised to force a spirit out of a Gigai it happens to be wearing, or to drive stubborn souls from a corpse. They are taken in the form of a pill called a Gikongan: swallowing one pushes the user's own soul out of their body and lets the artificial soul pilot the vacated shell, following a preset pattern of behavior until the Shinigami removes it. Each carries its own personality, and the pills can even animate soulless bodies or inanimate things such as a stuffed toy. To broaden their appeal, the Shinigami Women's Association had the stiff official name softened to Soul Candy and the pills packaged in playful dispensers modeled on cartoon characters, whose traits the resident soul tends to echo.

Soul Candy is standard issue among the Shinigami of Soul Society, and the theory behind Gikon was pioneered by Kirio Hikifune, who invented both the souls and the Gikongan pill. Pupples ranks third in demand, trailing the best-selling Chappy, the cutesy variety favored by Rukia Kuchiki, and the runner-up Yuki, while sitting within a broad lineup that also includes Gringo, Ginnosuke, and Blues.
