Appearance

Tall and lean, Ugaki cuts a thin figure with a narrow jaw and sharp features. His raven hair is combed to the right, a single strand loose across his brow, and large round spectacles usually hide the gold eyes behind them. He dresses formally in a neat white shirt topped by a long red necktie, with gray slacks and brown shoes, adding white gloves whenever he takes control of his Doll.

Personality

Fawning, endlessly smiling, and slavishly devoted to Jin Kariya, Ugaki has stood at his master's side for decades. He is at heart a scientist and takes enormous pride in helping create the Bitto, which he hails as a breakthrough that will usher the Bount toward a bold new era. Polite and even gentle toward his fellow Bount, he wears a very different face in battle: cunning, smug, and theatrical, he treats combat as a game, delights in isolating and outwitting his prey, and turns openly cruel when finishing them off. He despises sloppy fighting that wastes time or wrecks the surroundings, prizing a flawless, calculated victory instead, so much so that being outmaneuvered leaves him fuming and unable to grasp the idea of defeat. For all his talk he is a coward, hiding while Gesell kills from afar, and he treats the Doll as a mere tool right up until it turns on him. In his final moments he curses the leader he served so faithfully, having never once imagined Kariya might betray him.

History

Decades earlier Kariya recruited Ugaki's scientific mind to solve a problem: how to grant Bount who could not summon a Doll the means to do so. Together the pair worked out the Zauberspruch für die Ladung, a rite letting a Bount call forth a Doll through set materials and an incantation, and they later discovered that Yoshino Sōma's maternal Reiryoku could yield the Bitto. When Kariya sets his plan against the Seireitei in motion, Ugaki joins the other Bount and uses Gesell to keep watch over intruders. After Kariya sacrifices Yoshino to spawn the Bitto, Ugaki drinks the concentrated soul serum they produce and revels in his new strength. Ordered to wipe out the Shinigami strike force that infiltrates the caves, he splits up and ambushes Izuru Kira, Shūhei Hisagi, Rangiku Matsumoto, and Yumichika Ayasegawa, believing them dead. His schemes unravel when Renji Abarai impales Gesell with Higa Zekkō and exposes his hiding place; as Ugaki tries to flee, Kariya bids him a cold farewell, and the enraged Doll seizes and crushes him, killing them both.
