Summary

Ichigo Kurosaki tracks down Uryū Ishida for their duel, but the sky splits open and Hollows begin gathering around the crack, drawn by Uryū's bait. As Uryū races off to fight them, Rukia Kuchiki tells Ichigo how the Shinigami wiped out the Quincy roughly two centuries ago. She explains that the two worlds must hold a balanced number of Souls, and that the Quincy, by destroying Hollows outright rather than purifying them, disrupted that cycle and risked the collapse of the universe, prompting their extermination once they refused to relent.

Uryū reveals that the ancient massacre is not what drives him. His true grief stems from the death of his master and grandfather, Sōken Ishida, who pleaded for cooperation between Shinigami and Quincy yet was left to die when Shinigami arrived hours too late to a Hollow attack. Ichigo kicks him and argues that Sōken wanted the two sides to work together, not for Uryū to prove Quincy superiority. The two then fight the Hollow horde back-to-back, complementing sword and bow.

Kisuke Urahara arrives with Ururu Tsumugiya, Jinta Hanakari, and Tessai Tsukabishi to clear the lesser Hollows, freeing Ichigo to face a Menos Grande that pushes through the Kūmon. When Uryū grips Ichigo's Zanpakutō, his own bow swells enormously, and he realizes Ichigo's Reiryoku pours out involuntarily and is always at maximum. He binds the sword to his head to fire a giant arrow, but Ichigo instead charges in, blocks the Menos Grande's Cero, and cuts a massive gash up its body, driving it to retreat.

The victory nearly kills Ichigo, whose uncontrolled energy destabilizes his warping Zanpakutō. Uryū steps on the blade, channels the excess power, and fires arrow after arrow into the sky to drain it, tearing his own hand apart in the process. As Ichigo stabilizes, Uryū silently begs forgiveness of Sōken, whom he now addresses as his grandfather, for having hated the Shinigami to hide his own failure to save him.

Notes

This episode adapts Chapters 45 through 50 within the Agent of the Shinigami arc and concludes the fight of Ichigo and Uryū against the Menos Grande. The adaptation trims and rearranges much dialogue and visualizes the balance of Souls with an hourglass rather than the manga's seesaw and dish imagery. Censorship removes several bloody details, including Uryū's cracked fingernails and the Menos Grande's cut ankle.
